I'M OUT OF ARTICLES! Well actually, I have 2, both written by me. One on the cooling system which I plan on using for the July issue, and one on cutting metal. That's it! So come one guys. Sit down at your computers and write some articles for the magazine. You'll be helping your fellow Bricklin owners! When you work on your car, please take you digital camera out and take some pictures of what you're doing and write an article. I need technical articles!!! If you started something, and it turned to a worms, became more than your capabilities, etc. please write up something about the job, and the problems. Help you fellow Bricklin owners. Have you gotten a nice new bobble for your car? Take some pictures and write an article about it. Are you going on a trip in your Bricklin? Take you digital camera, take some pictures, and write an article. Did you have a problem on a trip? Please write it up. What was the problem? Were you able to fix it? Did you have to take the car to a shop? How was it fixed? Have a problem you don't know how to fix? Write a letter to the editor, and ask for help. I'll try to help you immediately, and then publish your letter, or you could write an article. For long time members, you may have noticed that I pull interesting problems from both the forum on our web page, and the email mailing list, and put them in the "What They're Up To" column. Did you just learn something - like how to adjust the doors to open and close properly? Please write an article. Did you just get a new tool? Something that makes a job easier? Then write an article about it. Like many of you, I've belonged to numerious clubs over the years. One thing ALL clubs and orginizations have in common, is that they NEED, NEW, YOUNG, BLOOD. If they don't get new blood the orginization is going to DIE! If you look in every issue of the magazine, we have a "Welcome New Members" list. Most of these "new members" are first time Bricklin owners. It is up to us "Old Guard" to take these new comers under our wings and teach them. Unfortunately, too many Bricklin owners don't have a Bricklin shop next to them, nor do they have another Bricklin in their town. So how can the club help its members? Articles in the magazine! From jblair1948 at cox.net Wed Feb 4 07:50:19 2009 From: jblair1948 at cox.net (John T. Some don't. Consiquently, Novice articles are always welcome! Something like how to set the timing, adjust the carbruator. If you don't work on your car, how did you find a mechanic that will? What do you have to provide him so he can work on your car? Just because we've had an article about a subject, doesn't mean that we shouldn't have another article on that topic. Different people attack a problem different way. Or the original article left something out. PLEASE, PLEASE, share your experiences. This is YOUR club, and YOUR magazine! Submitting articles: 1. Feel free to use a word processor to develop your article, and correct spelling. 2. Please don't do any fancy formatting, or use any fancy fonts. I'll have to change all that anyway for the magazine. 3. Don't embed pictures in the article. When you want the picture to go, simply put something like **** picture 1 ***** or **** Picture of engine **** where you want the picture to be placed. I'll try and place the picture as close to that point as I can. 4. Don't edit pictures. I need the highest resolution picture you can provide. Small pictures - file sizes less than 100K usually don't enlarge or print very well. 5. I find that when I've finished writting the article, having a family member or friend read it, really helps. If they understand it, then you've managed to make your point and they'll catch typical errors where you've used the wrong word that the spelling checker doesn't catch, because the word is spelled correctly. 6. After you've made any final corrections and saved the final copy of an article, please use the "Save As" and save the article either in Rich Text Format (RTF) or as a Text file (TXT). Email me the aritcle and pictures. 7. Send pictures in a seperate email, about 5 pictures per email. Try not to exceed about 5-6 Mega Bytes of attachments per email. John T. I decided to tempt fate again yesterday. It turned out to be a 14 miles drive, and I avoided another return on the back of a tow truck - barely! The car started to falter about seven miles out (engine missing, lack of vacuum so braking was scary!), so I turned around, and the engine smoothed up again on the way back... and died completely half way up my driveway! After a couple of minutes, I tried to start the engine again, and to my amazement it did start right away, so I parked the Bricklin in the barn. I also have a problem with fried batteries (two in seven months and less than 1000 miles), the VDO ammeter always registers full charge, and the brakes are not working too well. This Bricklin obviously has "issues", to use a good Americanism! A. Part of the engine stalling problem might be the fuel level in the float. When the engine died in my driveway, I opened the hood, and saw the aftermarket "see-through" filter I installed was nearly empty of fuel. Running at idle, the fuel filter is always full. I had previous problems with rust and dirt plugging the fuel pump and the fuel filters, but the pump has just been replaced, I changed both fuel filters recently, and there was no evidence of rust or debris in the filter. I still will have the fuel tank cleaned and lined as soon as possible. By the way, there is no problem with the gas cap or vacuum building up in the gas tank. The carburetor was recently cleaned and a new "rebuild kit" fitted. B. I also have electrical problems with that car, as proved by the dead batteries and total loss of electrical power which happened twice recently. This is what I did and checked, following John T. Blair advice: 1. Connection to the coil. The original connector wiring is clean and tight. 2. With the engine running, I "wiggled" all the wires going to the engine. No sputtering or cutting out, all the wires looks fine. I checked all connectors/bolts. All are clean and tight. 6. The coil connections are fine, but as this is a cheap item, I will replace the coil in case it is breaking down when hot. Any suggestions as to the best replacement coil? 7. Distributor cap and wires/spark plugs are new. 9. Ignition wires are tightly seated in distributor cap. 10. I installed a new battery two days ago, and I made sure the connections were clean and tight. 11. The needle of the ammeter is stuck at the maximum positive reading, even when the ignition switch is off. I tested the charging system of the Bricklin, using my Actron digital multimeter. The testing shows the charging system works fine. According to the Actron manual, parameters for the charging system are 13.2 to 15.2 volts at idle, and I saw 14.62 to 14.64 volts on the meter. At an idle between 1800 to 2800 rpm, there was less than 0.5 volt difference, which again is normal. With the electrical system loaded (everything electrical on - lights, AC, auxiliary electric fan), the readings did not drop below 13.40 volts, again normal. So. apart from the fact the VDO ammeter is not working but still letting current through, and that the alternator does not seem to be overcharging, I do not really know why I had two batteries "fried". The diagnosis was the same when I took both batteries to be tested: "The battery is fully charged, but there is something broken internally". Besides changing the regulator (just in case!), what would you suggest? C. Brakes! You have to push the brake pedal really hard to slow the car, and forget about locking the wheels. It does no brake well enough to even get close to that! Two technicians gave me the same diagnosis - faulty brake booster. I know the brake booster is unavailable, so I would have to have the original one rebuilt. but is there another booster I could get new and that would fit? Jacques, With the engine off, put your foot on the brake pedal and press lightly. Then start the engine. Shortly after the engine comes to life, the pedal should go down a little. If not, then there is a problem with the booster. If the pedal goes down, then it's possible that the linkage between the master cylinder and the booster needs to be adjusted. John John T. See http://en.allexperts.com/q/Ford-Repair-811/Rear-Main-Seal-1983.htm First make sure the PCV is working though. If it isn't, pressure can build up and force oil out. I had a Jeep where the rear main seal was leaking something fierce, but replacing the PCV dried the leak right up. The price is $12,000 and the car is located in southern Connecticut. The vehicle is in very good running condition and has 27,000 original miles. With the exception to the air conversion of the doors, and a TT center console, the car is mostly original. It's white in color (w/ black pin striping) with an automatic transmission. The VIN is 00041BX55001570. I have receipts from almost all work ever done to the car. The car has some minor hairline cracks in the acrylic on rear corners and one of the door skins lifting a bit, but otherwise looks great as well. Along with the car I will be also giving all spare parts, all Brickline magazines (many, many years worth), a Bricklin repair manual and a car cover. If anyone is interested please feel free to send me an email and I can send pictures or supply additional information. Thanks, Frank From frank.cweklinski at snet.net Sun Feb 22 18:03:43 2009 From: frank.cweklinski at snet.net (Frank Cweklinski) Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 20:03:43 -0500 Subject: [Bricklin] Selling My Bricklin Message-ID: <000301c99552$92e296f0$b8a7c4d0$@cweklinski@snet.net> Hi All, I have decided to sell my 1975 Bricklin.
