Here's advice that will assure you a safe and enjoyable trip to WI. Check all fluids - water, oil, brake and clutch fluids. Don't forget your windshield washer. Start your MG and let it warm to about 170 degrees on the temperature gauge, check oil pressure for at least 40 pounds idling, do a quick test of all systems such as windshield wipers, heater, defroster, lights and turn signals, test the brake pedal for a good solid feel and be sure that the brake pedal position remains constant if pumped several times. Perform a rolling test of the brakes in the driveway with a few quick stops from walking speed and pay particular attention to any sign of wheel lock-up. Then load your wife in the car and drive it gingerly to the nearest Hertz agency and rent yourself a nice mid-sized car like a Malibu or Camry. Drive gingerly home and park the MG in the garage for the duration of your trip in the rented car! Your vacation should be trouble free! I had been advised to replace the brake fluid with silicon and I think that was a major factor in the freeze up. I?m not interested in doing this work or really working on cars in general any more so I?m selling the car. > Other things I see that could use restoration are the seat upholstery/padding, adding the vacuum advance to the distributor (I?ve had it since 1976 and never had the advance working, seemed to work fine with just the centrifugal advance), at least two tie rod ends don?t have dust covers (but the tie rod ends are new as of the restoration), and the engine compartment generally looks bad since I didn?t have that repainted when the restoration was done. > One the other hand, the drive train is good. The engine had a complete rebuild and since at the time I could only find 88mm sleeves that?s what it has. The head, which appears to be the TR-4 head, has had a valve job, shims were added to the differential to take out the slop. The transmission is not synchronized in first gear and the second gear synchronization is slow. The transmission is from an older TR model, I?m sure this car originally had a transmission with overdrive but doesn?t now. New U ?joints on the drive shaft. > All the gauges work, the speedo was rebuilt and I think the tach was too, it works fine but I can?t remember for sure if a rebuild was done on it during restoration. > Work that was done on the body includes painting with Imron and replacing the floor pans (with replacement floor pans, not just sheet metal) and the battery box. I?m sure the battery box was rotted out from just the corrosion the battery causes and the car had sat outside for 4 years before I bought it and I suppose that is what rusted out the original floor pans. There are now a number of minor scratches in the paint and a very small dent/crease on the front of the car. > I guess the car has always been in Texas. I knew the previous owner had the car for 6 years and it was in Dallas then. This event started more or less by accident a number of years ago after an all day outing with the BMCU. Seems we all ended up in the downtown area hot and thirsty and someone (perhaps Mark or Pugs) mentioned there was cold beer and live music just a few blocks away. A good time was had by all and so the fun continues this weekend. As stated this is informal and just a chance to experience food from all around the world and listen to good music with friends . Saturday night's headliner is Bettye LaVette, an R&B soul singer. She has been recording for something like 40 years. Anyway the concert is free and should be a great evening. We will be arriving around 6PM for food and walking around checking out the vendors etc. Typically, we watch the concert from the north beer garden as the stage is the north stage. Concert starts at approximately 8:30. Check the Living Traditions website for all the information. Also, this is not a driving event, so bring your LBC or the grocery getter if you dont trust your electrics. Hope to see you there. Diane and I always park on the north east corner of state and 4th so right across the street from the stage. This is a pay lot, probably like 5 bucks. A new bldg was built on a portion of the lot last yr. however, it still appears that it is public parking. We don't mind paying for the convenience. Otherwise parking is on the streets surrounding the venue and might involve some additional walking. Your trailer might be an issue but then again you won't know unless you try. Here's proof. Gear for two packed in the trunk of a Lotus. While we missed the Antelope Island trip, I enjoyed an equally beautiful one with my son. We stayed overnight at Anderson Cove Campground on Pine View Reservoir. After breakfast we visited Causey Reservoir, over Trapper's Loop to Morgan, up to East Canyon Reservoir, and then up East Canyon and down Emigration Canyon. It was a very cool night, but a gorgeous, sunny day. There was even a nice Jaguar XJ6 (XJ40) proudly sporting a leaper parked in a drive along Emigration Canyon Road. Believe it or not, we got all of our camping gear in the miniscule 4 ft3 trunk of my little Lotus. That included a sleeping bad, 2-man tent, blanket, pillows, tarp, 2 sleeping mats, jackets and sneakers. We kept a lunch cooler and soccer ball in the cab with a few odds and ends. Warning: Do not try this with chocolate or other low melting, gooey stuff. However, it's a great place to keep pizza warm until consumed. Bruce O. I hope that you will join us. Jill and I are going to take an additional day drive to Vernal, Monday. We are inviting anyone who would like to join us, to come and enjoy what I have found to be one of the prettiest two lane roads in the West. This is a very quiet, two lane highway that winds it's way along the San Miguel River. Check it out on Goggle Earth. We've taken this road and it has incredible scenery. Please join us if you can for an unforgettable cruise on an incredible road. We will leave Moab Monday morning and travel South to the La Sal Junction (26 miles) Then head East on U46 and into Colorado and C90 to the small town of Vancorum. (56 miles) There we will head North along the San Miguel River on C141 to Grand Junction. This 92 mile section of winding, smooth, two lane highway has got to be one of the best scenic roads in America. (110 miles) >From Grand Junction, we will head West on I-70 for a few miles and then North on C139 to Rangely, CO. (82 miles) In Rangely, we continue North to Dinosaur and West on US 40 to Vernal where we will spend the night. ( 53 miles) The mileage is approximately 325 +/- miles to Vernal, taking this route. >From Vernal back to Salt Lake is approximately 170 miles following US 40. Of course there is also the option of going over Wolf Creek Pass out of Duchesne.
