Please hold the date open. The location is the same as in recent past years, St Paul's Episcopal Church located at 261 South 900 East, SLC. Paul Jarouch has graciously consented to coordinate the Pot Luck portion of the evening, please email him at bughous at msn.com to indicate what gastronomical wonder you will be providing. Please let him know early what you have planned as waiting till the last minute will surely give him ulcers! Rarely in the past has there been a problem, but please plan on a dish with 8-10 servings and Paul will let you know if other categories are in greater need of faire. This is the general memberships opportunity to voice their opinions, concerns and interests for the events of the coming year. I have said it before, but hear goes again, this is YOUR club and YOUR voice needs to be heard. Some of our regular events did not happen in 2009 because no one stepped forward to be a sponsor. Please bring your ideas, enthusiasm and a tasty dish for an evening of LBC talk and bench racing.* *Disclaimers: Donations to the Treasury are always welcome. BYOB, (fermented beverages, in moderation, are allowed), plastic silverware, plates and napkins will be provided. Serving utensils are available. Come early (5:45 pm) and help set up or stay late to put chairs and tables away. Offer valid for the date of event only. With that in mind, I thought that I would make a short list of things to keep in mind when you choose to sponsor one of the clubs driving events. We always need more volunteers for these events and so I hope that this will help you make the decision to help the club out. First, think about a drive that you have taken in your LBC in the past that you really enjoyed. It could be somewhere that you went on your own or with a club. It is getting harder to surprise us because most of the interesting roads that are close, have already been done but that's ok, we enjoy them every year. Try to avoid the freeways whenever possible and we love the twisties. Second, is a date. Some people object to events on Sunday and can't participate, but sometimes we try to do one a year just to mix things up a bit. We usually try to avoid holiday weekends and other clubs previously planned events. If you think that weather might be an issue you can even pick two dates (a rain date) if you want and then just notify everyone with a general email, bmcu at autox.team.net, as it gets close. Third, is the meet up location and time. Any large usually vacant parking lot near the intended route will do. Time is derived back-words. Where do we want to be at about noon. It could be a picnic ground somewhere on the drive or a convenience store or fast food stop. Just tell people what the plan is and that they can bring a sack lunch if they like. Also allow for rest stops along the way for pictures and for vehicles to regroup. Forth, plan to be at the marshaling area about 45 minutes before the selected departure time so everyone can do a meet and greet before we leave. This also allows for a drivers meeting. The meeting should cover what is the basic route and any road work or problems that we need to be aware of. It is not essential, but it usually helps if you drive the route once about a week before the event to check for time and any traffic problems. (Darn the luck, an excuse to stretch the legs on that LBC for a worthy cause!) Most members have done these tours many times before and know the basic turns but a few printed maps (MapQuest) for some of the newbies might be helpful in case we get separated. Lastly, write a brief article about what you have decided. Rob Foye, rfoye at WWDB.org, is our newsletter editor and I'm sure that he would be happy to help you with content if you would like. Paul Jaroch, bughous at msn.com, has also volunteered and said he will write the follow-up article afterwords if you don't feel comfortable. That's about it! You'll be helping the club out. You'll look like a hero and meet more of the other members. So, come to the February 2010 Annual Planning Meeting & Pot Luck located at St. Paul's Church at 261 South 900 East, SLC, 6:00 pm, February 27th and lets plan a great summer of driving (and the livin' is easy)! First off, I couldn't believe that the volume of traffic DIDN'T slow down for me AT ALL as I came off the slip road! I had to squeeze into a barely big enough gap between two cars in order to get onto my motorway! The driver of the car behind me did realise his mistake though and honked an apology to me with a long blast of his horn! Unbelievably, I had to do the same again before I could get to the BMW lane. (Why do underlings use this lane? Surely everyone knows it is for BMW drivers only?). Anyway, once I was in the BMW lane and posing along at 110mph enjoying the adulation that the inferior car drivers were giving me, I noticed an inferior car ahead of me which was not only in the BMW lane of my motorway, but was driving at a ridiculous 70 mph! Naturally, I got to within a foot or so of his rear bumper and flashed my headlights to remind him he shouldn't be in the BMW lane of my motorway and to get out of my way. Of course, once he realised it was a BMW behind him, he did just that, but I could hardly believe it when he pulled straight back out behind me! He also tried to keep up with me and when he realised I would out-run him, he put on some blue lights in his front grill and urged me to get onto the hard shoulder so that he could congratulate me on my excellent car. Needless to say, I was eager to oblige and when we had stopped, the man gave me a piece of paper confirming what I already knew - that my car goes fast! Apparently he wants everyone to know what a superior car I have, so I had to take my driver's licence to a Police Station to be sent away to have some points put on! (They're not free points either - they're #20 each and I was only allowed 3). But the man at the Police Station said that because I drive a BMW, it won't be much longer before I earn the full 12 points, and then I won't even NEED a driving licence, so they will take it off me! See, now THAT's the sort of respect you get when you buy and drive a BMW. From mark at bradakis.com Sun Feb 28 00:43:10 2010 From: mark at bradakis.com (Mark J Bradakis) Date: Sun, 28 Feb 2010 00:43:10 -0700 Subject: [Bmcu] List management note, digest option Message-ID: <4B8A1E8E.3020204@bradakis.com> I survived the annual meeting. Wish I had felt better. But luckily for those in attendance I could barely speak, though I did try a time or two. Someone, I can't remember who, asked about getting the club email in digest form. It is actually pretty easy. While being home sick and grumpy I've been doing some Team.Net maintenance work. One minor detail is changing the links in the message trailers. Down below is a link that is now titled Unsubscribe/Manage Click on that to unsubscribe, obviously, as well as to set various options for your mail delivery. The link takes you to a page with three choices. The top one will take you to a web page to manage your list options. All you need is your list password. You know, the one that is mailed out to you on the 4th of every month. But since you didn't save that, you first want the third option, a password reminder. Click on the remind button, and at some point, maybe a minute or two, maybe 5 or 10, you'll get a message containing your password. Paste that password into the first box of the Unsubscribe/Manage page and click on the login button. The next page will have a bunch of stuff on it. About halfway down, under subscription options, the second entry is called 'Set Digest Mode' If you want a digest, which is a daily collection of all the emails sent to the list then packaged up into one email to you, click on the 'On' button. Then go down to the bottom and click on 'Submit my Changes' to have it take effect. Sometimes there is a flurry of activity that may or may not interest some, so a digest might be what they want instead of having each individual message arrive when the poster sends it. Actually, what some folks might like is to have something like a bmcu-announce list with restricted access, only for "official" notices about club stuff. And the general list with tech questions, parts queries, impromptu drives, Olympic hockey game chatter and such. Being on the announce list would be required, the general list optional. There are a few other things to be discussed regarding the club's presence on the net, stay tuned. mjb.
