I should have mentioned in my first response that the problems are
not yet fully resolved, it may be a few days, perhaps even a week before
the web site becomes available on a consistent basis again.

And on a somewhat related note, the club really needs the monthly
newsletter to keep folks informed.  Once I get all this computer stuff
sorted out, I'll consider taking on this task.  We shall see.

off just been blasted. I now own a rustry tr6 with a very smooth engine.
Should I use the 6 engine in the 4? would it drop right in? they made a tr 250
right? Would I see much perfomance improvenemts? O should I just go back with
the origional 4 banger? thanks. Tony

Some days I just have *so* much fun with computers.  But things
are pretty much under control now, the BMCU web page and email
lists should be stable for a while.  And I should be able to actually
spend some time at Bailey's working on cars instead of sitting in
my basement office glaring at the screen.  That will be nice.

Karen and I will not be going on the Memorial Day trip coming up,
hope those of you planning on it enjoy the summer weather and great
southern Utah scenery the trip should provide.

A fair number of folks have swapped out the original carbs for a pair of 
Weber
downdrafts, which I assume is the conversion you are thinking of doing here.
And they have been happy with the increased performance and driveability
of the new carbs.  And that is the main reason they see the benefit, the 
carbs
they install are NEW.  If you yank off a pair of clapped out, leaking, 
misadjusted
and neglected  Strombergs and install a shiny new set of Weber DGV
style carbs, you will get an improvement.

I wonder if anyone has gotten a performance increase by replacing a set of
clean, top condition, well-tuned Strombergs by some decrepit, dirty, 
leaking,
badly adjusted old Webers?

I don't mean to sound like a commercial pitchman, but at Bailey's we work
on a modest number of TR6s and usually have little trouble getting them to
pass emissions, IF the carbs are in good shape.  And a decent idle, smooth
acceleration and such are not a problem.

My main beef with the Weber DGV series of carbs is that the kits to adapt
them to Triumphs require the 'sink trap' type manifold where the airflow
makes a 180 degree bend then another 90 degree bend to get to the inlet
path.  Anytime the input charge has to change direction you lose efficiency.
And it changes direction a lot with the DGV conversion.

In my opinion I think you'd be better off and dollars ahead just sorting out
the problems with your current carbs.

Now, if you want to go to a triple DCOE sidedraft setup, that's different!

The TR4A frame and TR6 frame are pretty close to identical in the 
front.  It should
not be too complicated to make the 6 motor work.  I can't recall off the 
top of my head
but I think there are some minor issues with radiator mounting and some 
plumbing
rerouting, but nothing too daunting.

You may want to consider going to http://www.team.net/mailman/listinfo and
signing up for the triumphs and 6-pack lists and asking there.  You can 
go to
http://www.team.net/archive to poke around the recent traffic for those 
lists
to see what they are like.

The 2.5 liter six will be smoother and rev higher than the 2.2 liter 4.  
Driving
around town you probably wouldn't notice that much difference in torque, the
power in the TR6 comes in a little bit higher in the rev range.  Gee, 
two cars
that I really regret selling in the past were my TR250 and my solid axle 
TR4A.
So it goes.

There used to be a fellow active in the club who had a 'TR250' that was 
just what
you are talking about, a TR4A with a TR6 motor.  And I keep thinking about
putting a 2 liter GT6 motor in one of my old squaretail Spitfires...

British Field Day will be held at Liberty Park again this year. It is
a time for all British car and motorcycle enthusiasts to get their
rigs out of the garage, clean them up and get them running as well as
can be expected. All British cars and bikes in any condition from 100-
point restorations to works in progress or an old daily beater are
welcome.  The more the merrier! All the British car/bike clubs are
participating.  Don't let those other marques make your club look like
slackers.  Call your fellow club members and get them to the event!

For the brave of heart, we will have the road course set up again this
year on a closed access road inside the park. It promises to be as
noisy and challenging as previous years!

During the event there will be, shop talk, bench-racing, catching up
with old friends, drawings for raffle prizes and more. Liberty Park
has many amenities including one of the largest and best playgrounds
in the city, the Tracy Aviary and a small amusement park with a Ferris
wheel and merry-go-round. Even if your family doesn't share your
passion for LBCs (little British cars), there will be plenty for them
to do while you are getting your fix!

Proceeds from this year's event will be donated to Saint Paul's
Episcopal Church's Community Outreach Fund. Their food pantry, which
is the only one in the state of Utah to be open on Saturdays, is one
of the recipients of this fund. Saint Paul's is providing volunteers
to assist with the event so the organizers can have more time for some
fun, too! Saint Paul's is also going to be providing food within the
event this year. Get ready for fresh grilled hot dogs, hamburgers,
sandwiches maybe even donuts in the morning.

I have a 79 spitfire with the rubber bumpers. I understand that you can
exchange the rubber bumpers for earlier chrome bumpers that look better and
have a significant weight savings. I also understand that it is not a straight
swap. Has anyone done this conversion? I would be interested in discussing
this with you to find out the specifics.,

Dave,

I used Casey's Machine Shop, 2364 S.Redwood Rd, West Valley City,
84119-2027, he was recommended by Strasburg Automotive in Lindon (the guy
that re-built my TR3 engine).  He re-ground the crank that was badly
scarred.  

Still in the break-in period with the engine but all seems to be going very
well. Cost was $133.50 and service was prompt.

i looked for quite a while, finally found CASEY"S for the cranks, and hunter
for the blocks, just make sure they balance your rods and pistons, i used them
for 1500 triumphs, the last one i did was sold and driven from here to
brownsville texas with no problems

Hunter Machine had a fire that destroyed the whole shop. They are in the
process of rebuilding but are not expected to be open again until July or
August.

My transmission laygear shaft seems to be spinning or burrowing its way
through my front cover.  I still have .090" of front cover left, but
eventually it will make it through, and that would make for a bad day.  The
shaft seems fine, with no notable wear or play in the laygear.  Questions:
Should this shaft be spinning at all?  Has anyone out there experienced this
problem before?  Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be
appreciated.
