This will be the 20th anniversary of the event that led to the event's formation, so it will be an especially significant and nostalgic event. The route from South Towne Mall will be along the I-15 frontage road (east side) over the divide between Salt Lake and Utah county valleys, to SR 92, then east to Alpine UT (actually, SR 92 divides Alpine and Highland UT). This will be a rest stop and rendezvous point for those joining from the south (or elsewhere). Then we'll go up Alpine Canyon, past Timpanogos National Monument, and over the crest of the Wasatch -- one of the most spectacular roads in northern Utah. Then down past Sundance Resort (with a wave to Robby Redford), to US 189. Then up Provo Canyon past Deer Creek Reservoir, into Heber City and the BBQ at Heber City Park. We expect to get to the park about noon, enjoy the food and raffle for an hour or so, and then head back home in ad hoc groups according to individual schedules and interest (e.g., some folks will be stopping in Park City to see the Austin-Healey car show). There will be burgers etc. provided at the picnic, though you probably will want to bring your own drinks (alcohol is a No-No in the park however). To see the map of the area, try: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=salt+lake+city,+ut&ie=UTF8&ll=40.501531,-111.634827&spn=0.437012,0.462112&t=h&z=11 Hope to see you there! --Gary Lindstrom BMCU newsletter editor and webmaster p.s. The BMCU's 20th anniversary and this years Alpine Loop and raffle are soon to become a reality. First order of business is food. This year the BMCU board will be providing the lunch at the Heber City park. I need to get a rough idea as to how many folks will be having burgers and how many would like franks? I'll take your emails and tally the information prior to heading off to do the grocery shopping. Please keep in mind that it is against the law to bring alcoholic beverages to any parks in Heber, that's all I'm saying about that. We will also be providing sodas, water and sides. Second, there has been mention of naming one of the annual events in memory of Michael Scoggins. I very nice gesture indeed, but those of us who knew Michael well have talked it over and we believe that he in his quiet way would probably not go for it, and as Paul said: with his twisted sense of humor would probably make it rain that day anyway! It will be nice at the Heber picnic to raise a glass of remembrance to our comrade. He would of liked it that way. Third, if you know of, or have any donations to add to our raffle stash, the more the merrier! Fourth, we will also be unveiling the new BMCU T-shirts (20th Anniversary edition) and hopefully the new Golf shirts too! Date and time: August 16th, 9am at South Towne Mall (106th South exit on I-15) for a 10am departure. For those who are coming from southern locales, we expect to stop at about 10:45am for bio reconditioning at the C-store in Alpine just before SR 92 enters Alpine Canyon (I forget which oil company operates it). A small group of volunteers will make their way to Heber ahead of the rest of the group to hopefully have lunch hot and ready as the cars roll into town. -- Mitch D. Message-ID: Hey guys, I was contacted today by a gentleman from the Edgemont Stake here in Provo. He saw my little yellow mini and had me contact him. His stake broke some sort of world record last year (I'm not sure what it was) and this year they are looking to do the same. This year they wanted to break the "Most people in a mini cooper" record (21 people is the current record), and when he saw mine he thought it was the perfect opportunity. I had agreed to do it (i thought it would be fun) but it turns out there are restrictions on what mini coopers qualify for the record. It has to be an original (pre 2001) British mini cooper, and come to find out it there are specific years that are allowed (not sure why) I can't remember the exact year but i thought it was like 1965-1969 or 1990-1999 or the mini cooper S years 1969-1971. I have an '82 and for some reason don't qualify. Well he asked me if i knew of anyone who might have a qualifing mini, and of course the first place to turn is the friendly folks of the BMCU. He said he would try to contact us through the email on the site (but i'm not sure if it that goes to the mailing list or not..) So i thought i would send a message for him. If you think you might be willing to do this. please send a message to the forum and try to contact him at Charles at abbott-abbott.com (i also have his phone number but i don't know if he wants me to hand it out.) Also he noted that they would take care not to damage anything (and if by chance anything did get damaged they would pay for the damages) they would be using girls ages 18+ and at least 5 feet tall and they would not be wearing shoes or belts. Thanks to everyone who listened. -Dylan From dylan.thurston at gmail.com Wed Aug 20 15:50:49 2008 From: dylan.thurston at gmail.com (Dylan Thurston) Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2008 15:50:49 -0600 Subject: [Bmcu] Mini needed for World record. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and seeing old friends and meeting some of the other members. The run was great but the facilities in Heber were awesome. If anyone missed it and would like to know how good the food was, just look at the photo of Margo Lindstrom as she " licks her chops!! These are all from a 79 MG B. Here's what i've got: SEAT KIT Passenger side top and bottom seat uphostery in great condition. No rips or tears. The drivers side was torn and discarded. HEADREST COVERS Both sides headrest covers in great shape. Again, no rips or tears. DOOR PANELS Both sides in perfect condition except that they've got 6" speakers mounted to them. The speakers are mounted with a thick spacer that makes them stick out into the cockpit a bit far for most folks' tastes. You might be able to replace the speakers with something a bit more conventional. You can pick them up from me in Ogden. Or i can ship them to you if you pay the costs. Photos available upon request. I'll hang onto these for a few days before i offer them up to the MG Yahoo Group.
