From darrellw at ipns.com Thu Mar 10 09:06:03 2011 From: darrellw at ipns.com (Darrell Walker) Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2011 08:06:03 -0800 Subject: [Autojumble] For sale - CA black license plates - unissued/unused Message-ID: <766B673A-FEF3-4E75-A7BF-3AF46DBEE02B@ipns.com> I have a pair of CA black license plates for sale. The number is "PRC 122". I bought these about 20 years ago, intending to register my 66 TR4A under California's Year of Manufacture program (the original black plates were stolen in the early 80's), but my car wasn't old enough at the time. I moved away from CA 15 years ago, and don't have any plans to return, so I've decided to sell these. As far as I know, these plates have never been issued to a vehicle, and are in new, unused condition. Before purchasing, you should verify that your vehicle is eligible to use these, and check with the DMV to make sure they are clear to use. I believe I did have that checked with them before they rejected my application based on the age of the vehicle, but I'm not going to guarantee that. I'm asking $300 for the pair. Photos available on request. -- Darrell Walker 66 TR4A IRS CTC67956L Vancouver, WA, USA From pethier at comcast.net Thu Mar 10 09:18:44 2011 From: pethier at comcast.net (pethier at comcast.net) Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2011 16:18:44 +0000 (UTC) Subject: [Autojumble] [TR] For sale - CA black license plates - unissued/unused In-Reply-To: <766B673A-FEF3-4E75-A7BF-3AF46DBEE02B@ipns.com> Message-ID: <298559365.2270763.1299773924194.JavaMail.root@sz0119a.emeryville.ca.mail.comcast.net> > I have a pair of CA black license plates for sale. I've been involved in the trading of 1962 Texas black plates at about a tenth the price. Hi Phil, I think there are two factors at work. If you are buying a car with them, it probably means that it has lived its life in California, and probably will be much less rusty than some other areas of the country. I realize there are other states where cars don't rust away, but California would dominate in terms of numbers. The other factor is that many folks don't like the look of the modern reflector plates on a classic car. I was surprised to see what fairly poor examples of these plates were going for. I had these filed away, but at the prices they are going for, I'd be willing to part with them. -Darrell From TR3driver at ca.rr.com Thu Mar 10 10:06:40 2011 From: TR3driver at ca.rr.com (Randall) Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2011 09:06:40 -0800 Subject: [Autojumble] [TR] For sale - CA black license plates -unissued/unused In-Reply-To: <298559365.2270763.1299773924194.JavaMail.root@sz0119a.emeryville.ca.mail.comcast.net> References: <766B673A-FEF3-4E75-A7BF-3AF46DBEE02B@ipns.com> <298559365.2270763.1299773924194.JavaMail.root@sz0119a.emeryville.ca.mail.comcast.net> Message-ID: <29c901cbdf45$869d14d0$0301a8c0@randall> > Wow. They became kind of a status symbol among old car people, back when they meant the car had actually remained registered in CA since the 60s. Then the law changed, so now you can have black plates on any old rustbucket (within certain model years), but they have to be original black plates, not reproductions. Big demand plus limited supply = silly money. But I do think they look more "at-home" than modern white plates. http://tinyurl.com/yapelm5 -- Randall From TR3driver at ca.rr.com Thu Mar 10 10:08:51 2011 From: TR3driver at ca.rr.com (Randall) Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2011 09:08:51 -0800 Subject: [Autojumble] For sale - CA black license plates - unissued/unused In-Reply-To: <766B673A-FEF3-4E75-A7BF-3AF46DBEE02B@ipns.com> References: <766B673A-FEF3-4E75-A7BF-3AF46DBEE02B@ipns.com> Message-ID: <29ca01cbdf45$d46cf900$0301a8c0@randall> > As far as I know, these plates have never > been issued to a > vehicle, and are in new, unused condition. How did that happen, Darrell? I have never heard of the DMV passing out plates, and reproductions are not allowed. -- Randall From darrellw at ipns.com Thu Mar 10 10:17:04 2011 From: darrellw at ipns.com (Darrell Walker) Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2011 09:17:04 -0800 Subject: [Autojumble] For sale - CA black license plates - unissued/unused In-Reply-To: <29ca01cbdf45$d46cf900$0301a8c0@randall> References: <766B673A-FEF3-4E75-A7BF-3AF46DBEE02B@ipns.com> <29ca01cbdf45$d46cf900$0301a8c0@randall> Message-ID: On Mar 10, 2011, at 9:08 AM, Randall wrote: >> As far as I know, these plates have never >> been issued to a >> vehicle, and are in new, unused condition. > > How did that happen, Darrell?
