Message-ID: <5071b4b4.4e5.0@thecia.net> This is less about Tigers and Alpines, and more about the debate between keeping our cars original(unrestored) versus having them restored. In the October 7 New York Times Auto section, a reporter interviewed the owner of the Simeone Foundation auto collection in Philadelphia. Dr. Simeone's raison d'etre is exhibiting only unrestored cars. His specialty is racing sports cars, and amongst the exhibits is the only original Cobra Daytona coupe that hasn't been restored. The site for the article is www.nytimes.com and click on 'autos'. Also, if you are going to be in Philadelphia tomorrow (Oct.8), the museum will hold an auction for cars not part of the museum collection as well as automobilia, conducted by Bonhams. Admission to both the auction and the museum is the $30 catalogue, and that admits two people. The museum site is www.simeonemuseum.org and information about the cars in the auction is at www.bonhams.com Rande From WSuman at aol.com Sun Oct 7 18:38:38 2012 From: WSuman at aol.com (WSuman at aol.com) Date: Sun, 7 Oct 2012 20:38:38 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Alpines] 3rd Gear pop out Message-ID: <100.1b532561.3da37a8d@aol.com> On my SV, ever since I'd owned it, I'd been having an issue with the tranny jumping out of third gear when I came off throttle. I had a spare tranny rebuilt, new synchros, etc. It was fine for 1000 miles or so, but now it too pops out of third when I unload it. If I stay on throttle, it stays in gear. Could it be a linkage issue? Is this inherent to them? The primary fix will be to rebush third gear and hone for the transmissions third gear journal running clearance. I would also be sure the dogs and sliding member is good, the dog detents in good shape as well as making sure the syncro teeth are sharp and unworn. It has been thirty years since I have rebuilt a Series V transmission but I have done a number of them over the years. There are synchro rings and there are bearings, and the proper way of handling these is set out in the factory workshop manual. Simply replacing the synchro rings is not enough in most cases. You need to check the condition of the main shaft and so forth. A good micrometer is in order (the factory workshop manual spells the details out). It really is a fairly simple fix. Our Tiger friends have to agonize about pulling the transmission but it is a straightforward task on an Alpine and the rebuild of the unit is, well, set out properly in the workshop manual. A little bit of care and some caution and, as Yogi Bear keeps reminding us, your mileage may vary, but, in the end, there is no reason for any Alpine to be popping out of gear. Been there, done that, got the tee-shirt, learned how to fix it, back around the time I was pulling road-guard when Caesar invaded Gaul. A careful and cautious rebuild is a relatively simply matter, not at all on the same level as, say, rebuilding the Girling power-brake cylinder. You guys bring back some very happy memories to me. Hard to admitt but early onset of oldtimers stops me from recalling the real name of this bushing. Since the tranny was just rebuilt(as was the case in one post I just read) Im sure I would replace the beraing/bushing I speak of.Much Luck!
