Part 3 Message-ID: <4F1069AB.6040403@mayfco.com> Part 3 I will set the motor up on my run stand (yet to be fabricated!) to assure that the electronics and motor are happy before taking it to the engine dyno. No use wasting time and money there. I am also planning on using a JW Ultrabell, SFI approved as a containment for the torque converter should it decide to go wandering about when in full boogey mode. I love my feet just the way they are, lol... Headers will be simple block huger types with a short side out exhaust just behind the front wheels. Auxiliary equipment will be reused from the 2010 motor: alternator, water pump, plumbing, etc. A new 9 qt pan has been located and will be used as well. By the end of a 5 mile long run, there is a lot of oil up in the lifter gallery and in the heads that has not had time to drain back. More oil is better and a dry sump wold be wonderful. They are, however, expensive to say the least and room is in short supply in this car. That prety much covers teh drive train..oh, I am going to get a lightly longer drive shaft made up as well. I wold really hate it if the front yoke came out of the tranny, lol.. and this one seems too close for comfort for me. I want a new parachute system, but this one will do for another year I guess. I am also make a swoopier front nose piece for the car. If you have seen photographs of the car then it is clear why that needs to be done, lol. It is like pushing a barn door through the air. The new nose piece should permit faster speeds with less power (fingers crossed, lol). I t has to be removeable because it is low to hte ground and out front a biut farther than the air dam in use now and it hits the trailer ramps. Some where in there I have to purchase a HANS device as well. This sport is expensive for a two meet per year season. And that's if World Finals happen in October. As I start assembling bits and pieces, I will set up a section on my web site for show and tell photographs and verbiage to go along with them. Part 1 Message-ID: <4F111A91.3040707@mayfco.com> Part 1 I thought it was time to let the list know of my plans for this year with the TWFS. 2010 saw the flying mile speed of the old Slug exceeded with a top speed of 210.779 mph. I plan on entering the car at the World of Speed in September this year with a new normally aspirated small block motor. The motor is a 5 bolt bell housing 260 circa 1963 vintage. I know that far more 260 moors were in Tigers than the 289 version so I chose that for the new bragging rights event on the salt flats. One of the goals is to show just how much horsepower can be made with the 260 configuration and then how well it will perform. I will be using an engine dyno this time around though since the last time I went to a chassis dyno, I ate a set of V rated tires when speeds wen above that, lol. But this motor wold not have come about without teh express assistance forma couple of list members: Sandy Ganz and Owain Lloyd (who is currently off fooling around driving in the London to Capetown rally in a Mercedes). Sandy provided me a lot of hardware: lightweight 4340 rods, roller rockers, roller lifters and an extreme energy cam from comp cams. Owain split the cost wih me for a set of new Air flow Research AFR 165 heads to put on the motor. These are seriously generous contributions and they are mightily appreciated! Two salt racers donate blocks, one of which was unfortunately damaged beyond repair. And it had the best bore, dang it. The second block has been align bored, decked and final bore finished to 3.810 inches. You will notice that I have not mentioned pistons: that's because they are basically unobtanium, lol. custom pistons are in work as we speak. The compression ratio being planned for is 14:1! That kinda puts this motor out of the street driven daily driver class... see part 2 mayf -- ______________________________ drmayf Worlds Fastest Sunbeam, period. 204.913 mph flying mile 210.779 mph exit speed From drmayf at mayfco.com Fri Jan 13 23:04:00 2012 From: drmayf at mayfco.com (Larry Mayfield) Date: Fri, 13 Jan 2012 22:04:00 -0800 Subject: [Alpines] World's Fastest Sunbeam Activity Report. Part 2 Message-ID: <4F111AD0.1030200@mayfco.com> Part 2 The induction system is a home cooked version. I am using a highly modified SBF truck lower manifold which has large runners and is nearly a direct shot at the intake vales on each runner. I ported the dickens out of this lower manifold and polished it quite a bit. It was port matched to the AFR intake opening on the heads. The upper maifold is a new piece of my design and supports a massive 95 mm throttle body. I think of this manifold as a linear tunnel ram. The crankshaft has received attention also. I destroked it! I was trying to maintain a final displacement less that 260 cubic inches and so I had the crank destroked to 2.84 inches. Not much, but, keeps final displacement just under 260 cid. I polished the crank some before the machining operations and when it is returned i will be neutral balanced. Ie, no external weights. I am not happy with having large lumps on the ends of the crank because thos impart bending moments into the crank. I have e neutral balance flex plate and will get a damper that is neutral balanced also. Balance will be through the use of tungsten slugs welded into pockets int eh cranks counter weights. The rods that the Professor, Sandy Ganz, provided will make this a long rod motor with what should be lots of torque. Rpm will be kept below 6500 though. One thing that is pesky is the use of my 989 Performance Automatic AOD transmission. 6 bolt tranny vs 5 bolt bell housing pattern... yeah there is an adapter available...for a mere 695 dollars! So I have fabricated my own. Actually pretty simple. One last part to fab and that is done. The drive train from the bell housing back is identical to the one used in 2010. I am gong to obtain new Bonneville tires though. 440 dollars each..ouch! see part 3 mayf -- ______________________________ drmayf Worlds Fastest Sunbeam, period. 204.913 mph flying mile 210.779 mph exit speed From drmayf at mayfco.com Mon Jan 16 15:00:50 2012 From: drmayf at mayfco.com (Larry Mayfield) Date: Mon, 16 Jan 2012 14:00:50 -0800 Subject: [Alpines] Craigs List IMP Message-ID: <4F149E12.2040804@mayfco.com> A friend sent me this notice of an IMP for sale in tH Puget Sound area.
