[Alpines] Something I don't understand

For at least 30 years I have tried to understand what this song means:
 
As I was goin' over the Cork and Kerry Mountains
I saw Captain Farrell and his money, he was countin'
I first produced my Alpine and then produced my Rapier
I said, "Stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya"
 
Why devil should take a man who have seen both an Alpine and a Rapier?
For 30 years I have not slept well because of this problem. And I have
had not courage enough to buy a Rapier.
