This is for a non-rolling project, it can be 5.5" or 6" wide (needs to be 13" diameter though), or even any bolt pattern for that matter. It doesn't need to hold air in a tire. It just needs to be something that will look nice when cleaned up. Somebody must have something laying around in their garage! Please email me with details and I will respond directly. I'm wiring up a Series V tach in my race car (Alpine) that I got from a friend of mine. The tach looks to be in excellent condition but my friend had said that he had never had it in his car and that it was just a spare. Therefore, he didn't know if it worked or not. Well, I've got it wired up just like the book says, complete with a good ground, and all I get out of it is very erratic, jumpy movement and a general tendency to lag behind the motor when I rev it up. Once it's revved up, it reads way too high (when it's not bouncing all over the place). I searched the SAOCA forum and found a tach thread from January that appeared to be about the same situation as I'm having. Just as that fellow did, I cleaned the metal bracket that goes around the loop and made sure it was getting good contact with the contacts in the tach. Unfortunately, my problem still persists. The only difference between this other fellow and me is that I don't have the luxury of knowing if this tach worked prior to me installing it. Any thoughts on this? Should I just send it off to Nysonger or some other instrument place to be rebuilt? Is there something else I should look at? Any help would be appreciated. Do you have a hot coil and electronic ignition components in the distributor? These tachs were not set up to handle the rise time and amplitude on the pickup. Tom Hall engineering has a fix for that if want it. Go to this link and click on Tech Tips. http://66.175.58.218/ Ross "Commodore Blues" Loop too large? Had that happen on a Sprite. Just a thought. I've already tried switching the incoming wires on the loop wire, which effectively changes the loop's direction, but have found that it only works one way. Hook it up backwards and it won't work at all. As far as ignition/distributor modifications go, I'm running a Mini-Cooper S centrifugal advance Lucas distributor with points and condenser (the class I run in vintage racing doesn't allow me to run any type of electronic ignition). As I stated in my post, I have no way of knowing if this tach worked before I got it so it's fairly plausable that I may end up having to send it to someplace like Nysonger to have it checked out. I'll take any other suggestions you might have, though. I just sent a response to Theo Smith and the lists that addresses your point. I am running a Lucas sports coil but that shouldn't be enough voltage to screw up the tach operation, especially as they were offered as hotter replacement coils over-the-counter back in "the day." I'm open to other suggestions, though. In fact, it looks like the factory wire loop and appears to be in good shape. I'd like to land one asap before I'm forced to destroy the Series V unit and modify it to make it adjustable. Can anyone out there help me out?
