John,

I think much more knowledgeable guys will reply soon. The clutch is a tricky issue, and I think you may have internal issues, throw out bearing, etc that I don't know enough about to discuss.

However, I can tell you a couple simple things. The holes in that rod are not for adjustment although it would appear they are. I think the center hole is right. Also, cut the engine to prevent all that grinding when it acts up. It may also help if you know
how to 'float the gears', trucker term for shifting through the gears with no clutch use. I don't like to do it all the time, but it's a good emergency technique to get you home in a pinch.

If you're clutch seems fine, but then is not, it kinda sounds like you might still have a hydraulic issue, maybe clutch master needs work. Also, check the holes in both that tranny rod and the clutch pedal to ensure the pins are not wobbley due to wear.
Just a little bit of wobble at the pedal will make for a huge loss in push rod movement. And when you just barely have enough clutch to not grind the gears, you're so close to grinding them and don't even know it.

good luck,
