From rrochlin at comcast.net Fri Nov 4 15:46:08 2022 From: rrochlin at comcast.net (Rochlin Robert) Date: Fri, 4 Nov 2022 17:46:08 -0400 Subject: [6pack] Rear Brake Noise Message-ID: <51FA8D9A-7A64-4016-BE79-9ADE60017660@comcast.net> Hi List, I?m getting the weeds with the rear brakes of my TR6. When I lightly apply the brakes I get metallic clunk. If I repeatedly apply the brakes lightly the clunk gets more pronounced. I?ve carefully R and R'd them including new shoes. The brakes are also well adjusted. My thought is that the noise is the brake piston engaging the shoe on the ?fixed side? of the brake piston. It may have been there before I noticed it, but now that I notice it I?m thinking there may be some way to eliminate the noise I?ve not come to yet. It also may be that, as we said back in the day at Rocky?s Service Station ? don?t worry about it, they all do that?? Other than that the car has been great driving this summer. After much looking I wasn?t able to find a tire shop that could properly balance my wires, but one shop got them close enough to enjoy the car. The hub on the drive wheel was worn and when I went to one chain tire store to swap over the new spare for the worn tire I was told that company policy was they would not mount / dismount a tire more than 5 years old - never heard that one before. Back at Rocky?s we?d work on anything. I hope you all have some happy Fall motoring. Yikes, daylight savings ends tonight. I have to read Chris?s headlight post again. But the wheels are fitted with standard tire valve stems - and they don't protrude beyond the cutout in the trim rings. So it's almost impossible to fill the tire or use a pressure gauge. (worth-1000-words photo attached) I'm assuming there are longer tire valve stems available? I'm looking at replacing the tires, so it's a particularly convenient time to get this right. I've also seen valve stem "extenders" (one of my spare wheels had one of these fitted) - but this does not look like a decent alternative. Suggestions? Thanks! The alternative you suggested should work, but my experience is they leak and often don?t allow air to flow them to the shorter valve stem. It may be worth a try. Otherwise, you?ll just have to remove the beauty rings whenever you check the air pressure. Easy answer - I really like the look of the original design. And for me, the best look is with the original aluminum trim rings - beautiful. I'm currently using aftermarket chrome rings, because I only have three aluminum ones in good condition (and one or two that are beat up). And I just switched to these original wheels from wires that I had on for the last several years. Now --- talk about wheels that are "not very good" !! I'm really glad to be done with those. There are also several nice aftermarket wheels that I like. I happen to have a second TR6 (hasn't run in a long time!) that's going to need a nice set of wheel, I keep an eye on what's available pretty often. Enjoy the ride!
