Its always scary to mess with the hood latch given the potential consequences.
Thanks to those who chimed in. I noticed that the pin was not landing squarely in the hole so I used a screwdriver to turn it 45 degrees and now the hood pops open just like it should.

The forward opening design should prevent any pant-wetting situations unlike the more common rear-hingers. When those pop open at 40 mph, it definitely is an experience!

If you can turn the pin with a screwdriver it is likely to move again.? There is a jam nut inside the spring.? Work a 1/2 inch open-end wrench between the spring coils and snug it up to make sure it stays where you want it.
