We checked that connection and it was clean and tight. We are STILL not getting any voltage from the alternator to the battery. We walked through the procedure in Dan Master?s book 3 times and every time, it points to a bad alternator which I had tested and it?s putting out over 13 volts (maybe not enough but more than 12). Why doesn?t this show up at the battery? We even tested at the back of the alternator and it only shows 12 volts (?). This suggests that if you measure the resistance between the alternator output terminal and the battery positive it would read a very low resistance.? About the same as when you touch the meter leads together.? This will verify that the connection to the battery is good.? The fact that the voltage at the alternator is 12 volts means the alternator isn't producing. What other possible fault could there be?? A bad ground?? But if the alternator wasn't grounded the light wouldn't behave properly. It's tough troubleshooting something via this medium. Battery voltage with engine off is 12 volts. Suspecting a possible battery problem, today we did a load test on the battery and it was OK. We then hooked up a different battery with the same exact results ? no voltage increase noted at the battery with the engine running. We are still completely confused by the fact that the alternator tested ?OK? (although only 13.4 volts instead of the expected 14+) but there is no voltage increase at the battery . Brown/yellow wire tests OK. We are taking a break until Monday when I will pick up my original Lucas alternator from the local rebuilder. The plan is I will have him verify the o/p voltage and we will put it on the car and test it w/o hooking the brown/yellow wire to the battery. If it?s registering the same voltage as tested by the rebuilder (hopefully 14+), we will attach the brown/yellow wire and test at the battery. Neither of the rebuilt alternators that we have been dealing with have shown more than 12 volts either at the alternator or at the battery. Almost new battery went dead. Charged battery and took car to shop. Meter shows alternator is not charging battery (only 12 volts, not 14.6 as per Dan Master?s book). Buy rebuilt alternator and the same thing happens. Swap alternator for a second rebuilt unit ? same thing, battery is not being charged. Tried 3 different meters ? all showed 12 volts. Hard to believe I got 2 bad rebuilt alternators. What?s wrong?? When I bought my TR5 from Charles Runyan?s estate, it came with 15 year-old tires. They had little to no wear, and drove fine, but I decided I should do the right thing and replace them if I was to take loved ones out for a drive in the car. Since there was only one manufacturer to choose from for redline tires, I bought 4 tires from Coker, through Discount Tire. Not cheap!! I put them on the car and there was a terrible wobble around 50 mph. I took them back twice to Discount to get them balanced, but the wobble persisted. Finally, I took them to an old guy (well, older than me) in Detroit who boasted he had balanced wire wheels for 40 years. He told me the tires were so out of true they could not be balanced. I took them back to Discount Tire and they called Coker. Coker refused to take them back unless they fell outside certain specifications. The Discount Tire shop didn?t really know what Coker was talking about, but went through the process and sure enough, the tires all fell outside the specifications. So the good news is, Coker will take them back. The bad news is, Coker has no redline tires and doesn?t know when they will have more, if ever. So my plan is to put new tires, not redline, on the car and keep the redlines I have if ever a buyer wants originality or the car is shown. Source some 205/70-15 tires from your favorite supplier (mine has always been Discount Tire) and then take them to a shop specializing in detailing. Find one that knows how to cut and dye your tires resulting in a red striped wall. I've seen it done many times and the results usually are outstanding. Bias-ply tires are difficult to deal with. Some say, don't even bother with balancing until they are broken in with say, a few hundred miles on them. They tend to be out-of-round when new. I had huge problems with two new sets of Hoosier Vintage TD race tires for my TR3. Around $1200 a set, mounted and balanced. I drive my car on the street too, so I was able to discover this before getting to the track. Repeated tries at balancing went nowhere. I had them "road force balanced" multiple times in attempt to improve the matter. This machine reads the run-out. I think 20 was about the number that you would not feel while driving. None of the tires were under 30 and some were 80. You didn't need a machine to see how out-of round they were, even at 30. Terrible. They really upset a weekend of racing at the Laguna Seca, Rolex Reunion. The car shook terribly between 60-90 mph. Above 90 was better. After the event I called Hoosier and they sent me another set, no charge. I had to eat the extra attempts at balancing. The second set was also very bad and a year later, my second Rolex race weekend was equally disappointing. Hoosier sent a third set, no charge. This set was excellent. This event is the only one that I have to run bias-ply race tires. I've heard from other racers that the much more expensive Dunlops are even worst. Hoosier did not request the bad sets be sent back. I have since remounted a couple of lower "road force" numbered tires and they are good now. So with some wear, they did get better. Roger Kraus Racing, tire company, recommended truing these tires by shaving the tread when newly mounted if they are noticeably out-of round and take a lot of weight to balance. Happy motoring, Dave H. > On 10/13/2020 3:05 PM auprichard at uprichard.net wrote: > > > > Just for what it?s worth?.. That alternator tested at 14+ volts (as opposed to the 13+ I was getting out of the 2 previously purchased rebuilds) and we are now getting 13+ at the battery even under load. Yes, it?s ?supposed? to be 14.2 but it?s better than 12 and it appears to be sufficient to charge the battery. At this point I?m keeping my eye on the voltmeter (Funny aside here: Through all this, we never thought to look at the voltmeter) and will occasionally check the battery but I?m hoping that this episode is over. I now know more about alternators than I ever thought I?d have to. I?m assuming that the other 2 alternators may not have been rebuilt correctly. Thanks to Dick, Robert, Richard, Dave, John, David, Bob, Rob, Gene, Steve, Brian, Ron, Victor, Robert, Michael, Jim and anybody/everybody else that chipped in with suggestions. I appreciate it. Again. ________________________________ From: 6pack <6pack-bounces at autox.team.net> on behalf of dctr6 at optonline.net > Sent: Tuesday, October 13, 2020 11:35 AM To: 'Bud Rolofson' > Cc: triumphs at autox.team.net >; 6pack at autox.team.net <6pack at autox.team.net> Subject: Re: [6pack] TR6 OEM hardtop value Bud ? The rear deck panel was the first area I had to have touched up after I bought the car back in 1989. My top actually seemed to seal pretty well especially around the windows. It definitely stiffened the car up ? less scuttle shake, less twisting over bumps. But it?s a convertible? that?s why the hardtop hasn?t been on the car in over 31 years. I quickly got rid of my hardtop because of that problem. You can try to protect the paint will a barrier of sorts but then the hardtop won't seal properly. The hardtop does make the TR6 look like a cool GT car but it is a semi permanent with pluses and minuses and the rear deck may suffer. I?ve not seen any for sale recently except for those crappy fiberglass ones (Parrish? $450 - $700) but he?s not interested in one of those. I understand that condition of the top will dictate the price but he?s looking for a ballpark figure. Thanks. The more delicate part is where the bumper bolts go through the fenders, on the sides. There, I used a rubber washer (Home Depot) against the paint, and a stack of fender washers between that and the bumper, filling the gap to prevent the fender from distorting and cracking the paint, as the bolt was tightened. One side has one more fender washer than the other.
