I just have a suggestion on what to look for, mainly a "breathable cover" that allows moisture to escape. My other thought is to put something under the entire car to form a moisture barrier floor This is to prevent dampness from rising from the ground, and getting captured in the car. Temperature changes can cause condensation to form on cool metal. My not too bright neighbor has a car packaged in a tarpaulin sitting on a gravel driveway that is riddled with weeds. If he leaves it that way too long he will be able to carry much of it away with a shovel. There is a pawl that turns the gear (cog?) that advances the odometer number wheels. If the grease for all that stuff dries out, the cable has to work harder against that resistance and sort of 'winds up' a bit like a spring. Once the pawl turns the mileage wheel (about every third of a tenth, IIRC) and the needle jumps as the spring unloads and the magnetic bar spins faster for a bit. Anyway, lack of lubrication is the usual cause one way or another. Reduced clearance between the needle plate (behind the face) and the rotating magnetic bar can cause contact and jump around, usually with scraping sounds. There are some good how-tos on the web, but yes, there are lots of small parts and springs in there. Opening it up for careful lubrication (like 1 drop) may help. My TR6 was restored/changed colour in 1985, by a previous owner. He stripped the French Blue and painted it Signal Red. I bought it in 2000 and I finally painted the valence black this summer while I had the grille off for cleaning at the same time that I installed new horns, all of which in anticipation of driving to the 6-Pack 2012 TRials in Niagara. I did not want the 6=Pack crowd to point at the Red valence !!! In the end I was not able to attend The TRials but the TR6 did get a number of good updates over the summer. I much prefer body color behind there. However I will argue till dusk with anybody that doesn't think the tail should be flat black, but I guess they're entitled to their opinion too. (haha) But if you're going for concours, be sure to do a crappy job with the paint brush between the grill posts! I wonder if anybody knows the true history of this? I looks to me that someone decided that if you can't get to it to wax it, they'd better slap on some flat black, or maybe just to hide the bugs as you also can barely get to it to wash.
