The cars ran/run great with good torque and decent idle. Both put on about 9k miles after the overhaul. My valve train developed a clicking noise last year which is now gone, but since it is currently being spray-painted I cannot check the engine at the moment. My friends car started running "odd" last year and it turns out at least two exhaust camlobes are gone (already seen by measuring reduced valve lift, but now very clear now the camshaft is out of the engine) and two others don't look good either. Several cam-followers are severely pitted. Soon I'll be measuring valve lift on my car. If not good, OK I know what to do. But what is collective wisdom, should I take my camshaft and cam followers out even if valve lifts do not suggest wear? It's difficult to get a good measurement of cam lobe wear with the cam still in the block, but using a dummy pushrod for the check might show something. You may be luckier than your friend, if your cam came from better stock. Proper cam break in and good oil also play a huge part in keeping the lobes in good shape. As another type of check, look for metallic shavings by using a magnetic drain plug. Nothing can be certain here without a teardown, but I wouldn't do so without good evidence. If damage has started, it should be contained in the cam and lobes, so the rest of the engine isn't necessarly at risk. The gauge construction severely limits the amount of light that makes it to the front of the gauge. The light travels around the edge of the gauge face plate (metal) through a perimeter slot of at most 1/8" and then gets reflected off the inside of the glass onto the face of the gauge. I have fabricated a test setup with an array of outdoor sign LED's (equivalent light output of 60W bulb) arranged around the periphery of the gauge housing and while I do see an improvement it is still nowhere near a modern car; even one from the 80's :) I think the only way to significantly improve the lighting of the gauges would be to have new faceplates fabricated out of plastic that would allow light to pass through those areas one would want lit, i.e. the numbers and markings; or to fabricate a flexible circuit that would mount in front of the faceplate but behind the bezel using surface mount LED's that would illuminate the front of the faceplate. Regards, Joe > Joe, I have electric fuel pumps on my 3,4 and 72 TR6. I use the Facet cube along with a pressure regulator. I attach the pump as near as I can to the tank and mount the regulator on a plate that attaches to the fuel pump studs on the block. I have had the pump on the 4 for 5 years, the 3, 3 years and the 6 is a restoration that is going on the road this spring. Of course it's possible that your stock, mechanical pump is faulty. This can be checked by following the instructions in the Bentley Manual. (Pressure, volume). If you decide to install an electric pump, most of them deliver more pressure than the carb (floats) can handle, so a pressure regulator must be installed after the pump. Somewhere between 1.5 and 3 psi works. One advantage in removing the mechanical pump (and blanking off the opening) would be having better access to the oil filter canister. Purolator makes a decent electric pump and regulator, priced around $40 each. Write back if you want more info on mounting, wiring, etc. I kind of doubt the pump you now have is related to the symptoms you now describe. When a pump is faulty, it usually fails to deliver enough at the higher rpms. I'd check the ignition timing at idle, and again as the rpm increases. Compare to the data. If you cramp the wheels (for example when backing out of a driveway) and then hit a bump, the tread can snag the sheet metal lip on the front fenders. The result will be a bent lip and a chunk of paint about the size of a quarter missing on the edge of the wheel well. The damage is clearly visible from the side of the car. I recommend no wider than 195 section width for this reason. Of course if your suspension is modified, then this may not apply. Lots of people will tell you that they run 215 tires with no problems but that does not mean you will not. The key here is a stock suspension, cramping the wheels, hitting a bump. It may also make a difference which tire you fit to your wheels (I am running Yokohama Avids 205/70-15). You may not have this problem, but I have had it, and others have reported it. I had to straighten the metal and repaint. If you have new paint like I did, you will be wishing you had opted for slightly narrower tires. Also be aware that the wider the tire the higher the steering effort. Wide tires look cool, but are not necessarily the best choice for the car. Standard new springs fore and aft that haven't settled yet, so rides a little high. Using extra large wheel stops in front (not sure they are needed) and spring-over-shocks in rear. And, yes, it is a little more difficult to parallel park because of the turning resistance with the additional width and slightly reduced turning radius. Limited mileage, so can't give you a long history of experience, but so far so good. Handles well even with higher center of gravity, but also have large front and rear anti-roll bars. IRS travel may then be a problem if you go with shorter performance springs, but who knows. Some use different size tires in the front than in the rear. TireRack correctly points out that precise revs per mile is not a simple calculation. According to the revs per mile calculator I used, this combo has about a +0.33 % speedo error over the factory standard 15 in. wheel set. I'm still learning about the performance of this combo. May make changes in the future, including rear camber. Be mindful to not scratch the window when you are doing it this way. Otherwise, take the car to a boat/ interior shop and have them install the snaps on the car with their handy-dandy handheld tool. It'll just be a few bucks. Jim On 3/28/2011 8:27 AM, im sloane wrote: > If anybody knows how to use the TRF snap installation tool, RFT108, I'd sure > like to know the trick.
