Lots of posts on the 6-pack forum. About 1/2 are not Triumph related. Also it is winter and my TR6 project is in hibernation as well as my 3 and 4 drivers. Not to much will be happening here until the end of March at the earliest. I can't proceed until I get the engine assembly completed and get going on putting the top coat on the body tub. I am sure I, for one, will be flooding this list once I resume my restoration! Just had a chance to look closer at it in the sunlight. What appears to be happening is the fan extension (and thus the fan) is free spinning. My guess is the two locating pins have been sheared or came out altogether. It appears the fan extension bolt is securing the extension to the shaft, so damage is not eminent except for the free spinning nature of the fan. 1.. To repair, does the radiator need to be pulled to extract the long extension bolt? 2.. Does anyone see a potential damaging event occurring from the missing pins? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. If both the fan and its extension can be turned by hand, or do not keep up with the crank damper with the engine running, I suspect that the long (3/4" diam?) bolt is either loose, or bottomed out in the crankshaft. If so, then the load on the two pins would be much greater, and could then possibly shear. If the bolt is loose, you should be able to lever the damper back and forth a bit, while considering that some of this movement could be at the thrust washers. You may want to try this test with the clutch pedal depressed to hold the crankshaft forward. Yes, it's necessary to remove the radiator to get to the crank pulley bolt head. (I think it takes a 1-1/8" socket) Know that if this bolt does happen to be loose, there should be some associated noise coming from this end of the engine, as when revving it. The extension would likely be out of balance., and unneccessary wear could be going on between the bolt and extension. It's not a big deal to drain the radiator and take a look at the bolt in question. No free spin what-so-ever. The engine has been rebuilt and installed for over 6 years with no problem. This is a recent development, so I must assume everything was correct. I did the ancillary attachments after the long block was rebuilt and used all original parts where reusable. Anything needing replacement was done with Moss/TRF/VB replacements and matched prior to installation. I probably won't get back to this for a week or so. I'll keep everyone updated. It was hard to get the car into gear and shifting was rough. I tried moving the slave cylinder push rod up 1 hole on the release lever and that had improved things marginally, for a little while. I finally got around to dealing with it and thought I'd report. The holes in the master cylinder push rod were very elongated and the seals in both cylinders (DOT 5) were pretty soft. So.diagnosis: elongated holes in the pushrod were shortening the throw of the release lever. All worked well until the cylinders got warm and the seals got mushy at which point either or both of the master and slave began to bypass. Cure: weld some undersized washers onto the pushrod and bore them out to fit a new pin. The hole in the pedal was OK. Rebuild both cylinders. Life is good. Get real, it is a Triumph that gets DRIVEN!! Reserve price is fair (not the buy-it-now price) considering the condition and extreme reliability this car has provided me over the past 7 years. But if you absolutely MUST have it now, just do the Buy-It-Now before anyone else bids and it's yours. Be quick though because in the short 3 hours it has been listed, over 50 people have looked and 10 have marked it as a watched item. I regret that I traded off my beloved '96 X12 a few weeks ago. The "Green Witch" has passed from my hands. I loved it dearly but it simply wasn't working out as my daily driver. The final straw was a hemorrhaging steering rack. Fluid all over, quite a mess. A rebuilt assembly would run around $1500 if one could be located. While some parts chains have a part number at a cheaper price, they will not fit. I tried. It's not that I didn't want to service it, but parts are getting harder to come by. (sniff) I'll miss the effortless torque of a six liter Jag V12 and its smooth purr at idle. The new car, a VW Passat CC, is very nice and gets 2x the gas mileage, but it ain't no XJ12. For some things there are no substitues. A bottle of Chateau Thames Embankment was consumed (from within a paper bag) in its memory. This stuff is like old brake fluid, but it blots out unpleasant thoughts, and it keeps me reasonably regular. The flywheels are different for the long and short cranks. From what I have heard, Fidanza aluminum flywheels will not work with the long cranks, only the later short cranks. For that reason alone the short crank might be the more desireable. I believe that the flywheel for the short crank is heavier, like 28 lbs compared to the flywheel for the long crank at 22 lbs. But if you compared the weight of the cranks with their correct and respective flywheels combined, the weight would be nearly the same. Making no real advantage to one over the other, at least that is my take on it. I assume it was done to meet new US safety specs that went into effect in the summer of 1974. This series started at CF27001U and I have CF27006U which has AUG 1974 on the Commission plate. It has the 1974 pollution set-up and was/is titled as a 1974. Another difference from the '74s was the rear TRIUMPH nameplate was centered below the rear bumper. I think the front badge went to a stick-on TR6 label at 27001 along with other minor changes; maybe someone has already compiled a list. The next 'series' started at CF35001 for the 1975 model year; maybe someone who has an early one can supply a date. It had the air pump set-up, so I guess that change was made to meet new US pollution specs. I'm no expert but I'm told the overlap between the '74, '74.5, and '75 series during production makes it hard to fix definite change points for each detail. The "74.5" is an unofficial (AFAIK) designation but is a convenient way to separate the cars when ordering parts, etc. Just another interesting chapter in the TR6 saga! Imagine my concern when I went to order certain parts and found that the moss catalog was "wrong". Took me a while to realize what I had was a version that was only in production for 6 months, and that I had to order either 1974 parts, or 1975 parts, depending on what I was after. One example is figuring out what the emissions system looked like. I wanted everything on my car intact, including the emissions, so I had to sort all that out as my DPO had thrown away anything related to emissions. My DPO had also installed the head gasket upside down, among other things. Imagine the fun that created. Others have detailed the differences in the 1974-1/2 model, so I won't repeat them. Suffice to say that it is a useful designation indicating a group of changes that Triumph made part way through the model year. We had made plans to meet at a bar to have a drink. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong. He said, 'Nothing.' I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior. I don't know why he didn't say, 'I love you, too.' When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. To my surprise, he responded to my caress, and we made love. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep - I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. Of course it is notable that Sam Halkias won his SCCA National Championship Race in the Fall of 2009 at Road America....(it was great to be there for that one) Sam and the TR6 Champ Car plus 3 more of his TR6s are going to be at Heartland Park. There's a rather large presence of TR6s in the midwest, and many are planning to attend. Honoring the TR6 certainly is the right thing to do and should be a lot of fun. Please look at: heartlandvintageracing.com Of course Kas will be there and the Triumphs will have a special CORRAL in a prime location. Right now, I have an 'Intent to Register' from 35 Triumph Drivers. Kas' new book will be published by then and there will be a special chapter on the TR6. He will have several book signing sessions during the long weekend. VENDOR/AUTOJUMBLE locations are $100 for 10 x 20 space. (get rid of old stuff, have a great time, and pay for the weekend) Joe A. -----Original Message----- From: Foster, Stan (HP IT) To: 6pack at autox.team.net <6pack at autox.team.net> Sent: Sat, Feb 20, 2010 10:49 am Subject: Re: [6pack] ANNIVERSARY OF TR6 I don't know if any of the big organization did anything special as we didn't ake any of the national events this year but a lot of local club events robably did something special. She even went with me to the 2008 Vintage Races in Watkins Glen for a day trip in a light rain in the 3. The only regret was that we didn't take the 4 due to its wind up windows. The 4 was the car that delivered the bride to the wedding ceremony for my 2 oldest girls weddings and it was also in daughter #2's best friends wedding photos. We call the 4 the "wedding car". I have been informally regarding this as 'THE YEAR OF THE TR6'....since I saw Halkias take the flag at Road America. The way things are coming together, I plan to use this theme at Heartland Park and the Kastner Cup in August. I hope that our vintage racing does not compete with any other TR events the 19-22 August time frame, but I would like to draw as many Triumphs from as far away as people are willing to travel. This event is geared to TRIUMPHS and their owners/drivers/racers. We are center stage. There will be some interesting TR FOLKS there, yet to be announced, and some very historical Triumphs. Has anyone got their slave cylinder push rod installed on the lowest of the 3 holes on the release lever? Mine's in the middle hole which I think is what the books shows but I'd like to make the pedal a bit lighter by putting the pushrod on the lowest hole of the release lever. Also, It's time to get my wife behind the wheel which means the seat will regularly be moved forward and back on the slider. Do these things actually work?? It sure doesn't move all that well now, unless I get out of the car, lift the back of the seat and then slide it forward for her. Mine's original so perhaps it's time to replace it. Thanks, Colin '75 From tr6taylor at webtv.net Sun Feb 21 15:50:45 2010 From: tr6taylor at webtv.net (Sally or Dick Taylor) Date: Sun, 21 Feb 2010 22:50:45 GMT Subject: [6pack] of clutches and seats Message-ID: Colin---The clutch will be easier to disengage when using the lowest hole in the operating arm. It will also mean that the linkage in the pedal box will have to be without much slop, or complete disengagement won't be happening! It's easy enough to move the clevis pin down a hole to try it. Triumph wanted to use the center hole to keep the pushrod alignment straight beween the Slave Cylinder bore and the operating arm. Some misalignment can put a top load on the bore of the SC, altho it may take a lot of strokes before this could show any extra wear. On the seats...The adjustment should give about four inches of back and forth movement. If you find the move difficult, try seeing what goes on with the seat removed (two bolts) and the lever is activated. The sliders may need cleaning and a shot of silicon or wax. I didn't pay any attention to the marque even though a buddy in high school drove a Spitfire. It wasn't until I was married that I got my first TR, a one year old 1976 TR7 that I kept for 5 years. It was during that time I saw a nice example of a TR6 next to me at a gas station that I decided I would need to get one. The larger engine, the IRS, the massive wheel size relative to the body, and the big grin on the driver's face convinced me that someday I would own one. Fast forward 24 years later, I brought home one that barely ran for the price of $6k. Three years later after a frame off restoration, and she is all mine. No car I have ever owned has brought me as many smiles per mile as the TR6. What a hoot. Cheaper than therapy, and more effective. My older sister could sit on the back shelf while I was being held by my mother in the front seat, but that couldn't last forever. There were always the lingering stories of the "zoom-zoom" in the family that I never was old enough to remember. As I approached driving age, I can remember scanning the Baltimore Sun classifieds for TR250's (right after Toyota and just before Volvo). I finally got my first Triumph in NC in 1993 (a 65 TR4) at age 25. Sold that 2 years later and got back into the hobby in Dec of 2000 with my first TR250. After getting my book logo tattoo in 2004, I'm pretty much tied to the marque forever. Then I sat in her sister's boyfriend's TR6 and decided I had to have one of those. I ended up breaking up with her because I wanted the car and couldn't imagine how I could have both. I finally found a '69 for sale for $900. Despite warnings from my father who had gone through the same thing with my brother and a Renault Caravelle, I bought it. It was amazing how much rust that car had sustained in its 7 year life (Pennsylvania). That was the first of four sixes. I might have had another but my wife is wearing the money for that one on her left hand. She also benefited recently when the money stash I was saving for the Ratco frame went towards the 20th anniversary present. Message-ID: <011101cab707$f5e9ba30$6401a8c0@home> Dear 6-packers Anyone know how thick the felt (I thought it was cork, but it's listed as felt) on the oil dipstick is? Mine crumbled and fell apart. I thought I'd just find some cork and make a new one, but I want to make sure that I'm measuring the correct oil level. And to add to the "how old were you when" posting - I was probably about 12 when an older boy in my neighborhood got a new one in around 1970. I thought the big wheels just made it look really cool and it was just an aggressive looking sports car. And then there was the sound! As I got older I got into muscle cars and drag racing, but I always had a special feeling for the TR6. When I met my future wife, her brother drove an MGA, and her dad had the remains of two XK140's in the garage and was attempting to build one car from them. We had an MGB for a while, which was fun, but what can I say, it was an MG. Flash forward to 2002. My next door neighbor was a Land Rover nut and I had mentioned how much I like the TR6. Imagine my surprise when he called me over one day to show me the 74 TR6 in his driveway that he had won in a charity raffle. He wasn't exactly mechanically inclined, the car needed a lot of work, so for a fee it moved to my garage, and the rest is history. To be honest, unless you put a washer that's more than 1/4" thick, it's not going to give you a bad reading on your sump dip stick. Look at the gradation on the D.S., down a quart (which is 15% +/- of the sump capacity) is down the dip stick something like .5 inches. I also think you can buy the felt from TRF and probably Moss. Detroit muscle was still big, and I had some of that (and did a few burnouts) before ending up with a string of practical 60s-80s Volvos. I bought my 73 when I was 40. My mechanical knowledge continues to expand. Bruce Simms __________________________________________________________________ Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. Go to Yahoo! It was released to the 6-Pack Forum on the 24th and will be given to the BCF and Triumph Mail List on a few days. Announcement: Over the past few weeks, James Matos, Len Renkenberger, Paul Rego and I have been working together to make Len's 6-Tech Manual available for download at no cost. Paul and I have agreed to host the manual on our respective sites and have had a number of 6-Packers do some test downloads for us. The test downloads have been successful so it's time to roll this out to the 6-Pack Forum first. There are a couple of download options so folks with high speed as well as low speed connections should be able to get what they need. There are also very specific directions on the steps to take to save these files to your hard drive. The first option is for those with DSL/Cable and is a download of the complete manual at 36 MB and a supplement at 16 MB. With a high speed connection, the 36 MB file should take less then 5 minutes. The other option for those with a slower connection is to download the individual sections that range in size from 1 MB to 5 MB. If you find that downloads are taking longer then expected, please try again at another time. Len has been very gracious in letting us post his manual and the only thing being asked is that you abide by the copyright for his material. You will find the files available here (http://www.74tr6.com/6-tech.htm) and here (http://tr6.danielsonfamily.org/6-tech-Manuals.htm) James Matos, Len Renkenberger, Paul Rego & Bob Danielson From tr6driver at earthlink.net Fri Feb 26 20:36:47 2010 From: tr6driver at earthlink.net (Jamie Palmer) Date: Fri, 26 Feb 2010 22:36:47 -0500 (GMT-05:00) Subject: [6pack] Age when TR's were born Message-ID: <6510225.1267241807347.JavaMail.root@mswamui-swiss.atl.sa.earthlink.net> Thanks for the support!! :-) -----Original Message----- >From: "Robert M. Might anyone have a British Leyland stereo FM/cassette deck they'd be willing to part with, or know someone who does? I'd like to put one in my 75 TR6. To keep my inexpensive "collector" insurance status, everything's gotta be stock or at the very least "period". Many thanks. Nowadays in our area when you show up at an event, you can often find Chip & Muffy sitting in the shade eating marinated melon balls. When they talk about working on their car, they mean "where to take it". There are a few serious wrenches around. Most of them do their own work out of a sense of enjoyment and they want to control the quality of the work. Feeling Curmudgeonly today, John Cyg. John, This may be true for some of the US Iron and custom hot rod owners, but most of the LBC owners I know on this list and the ones I meet locally do all the work they can on their cars. The two items some owners dont attempt is upholstery and paint. I am on my 3rd restoration and do all the work I can. I farm out machine work but try to do all the rest. My cars are by no means perfect, but they look good and run just great. When Muffy (actually Peg) and me drive to a car hop or show, we usually get take out at a local restaurant or diner and sit in our chairs and have our lunch and then take out a good book and pass the time reading and talking to the folks. BTW, what are marinated melon balls? Colin - Are you telling me that an insurance company is threatening to cancel your collector car insurance if you install a modern radio in your car? What about radial tires or new seat belts? You need to find another insurance company. Dennis Culligan, Highland NY / 1976 TR6 CF57948U (with a Blaupunkt!)
