In extolling the virtues of the lime as a cure for scurvy Ashford failed to
also mention the virtue of the quinine in the tonic.  The tonic part of the
Gin and tonic was reportedly added to the Brit's Gin in Singapore to combat
the effects of the malarial mosquitoes, or so the old wife's tale I heard
indicated.
