The sensors screw on the outside of the valve stem & reads pressure and temp and has data logging capability. Looks like around $800 to set up a dualie truck and tandem axle trailer. That would be the same price that Good Sam wanted to replace A, as in ( 1 ) blown tire on my old RV and for that price I only had to wait 24 hours. Expedited tire service was extra. I sourced and changed my own tire and fired Bad Sam after that. If I had TPMS then I wouldn't have had the problem. I'm glad this subject was brought up & now on my spring to do list for truck/trailer. jim g > On February 1, 2018 at 6:15 AM Bill Tobin via Fot wrote: > > I have it on my Ram 1500 pickup/tow vehicle. I know they prefer lower reserves (they don?t earn a buyer?s premium if it doesn?t sell; that said, I?m surprised how many cars don?t reach reserve) but BaT has several main factors that make it a better place for me to market a car ? 1) the auctions attract interest of knowledgeable bidders, 2) the seller can gauge the interest of readers by reading the comments and post further information, photos and videos if requested, 3) knowledgeable readers offer education about a given marque and model during the auction, 4) readers can research make and model in the BaT archives for guidance about what to expect the high bid range would likely be (I bought a race car that had been featured on BaT 3+ years ago, before auctions were offered, and I was able to read all of the comments and better judge the value of the car), 5) readers and bidders can look at past BaT auctions to gauge whether to trust the seller, 6) BaT is going to take the 5% buyers premium (up to $5000) from the high bidder?s credit account the second the gavel falls, and 7) the two-minute clock reset allows the bidding to reach its true limit. The seller has to sell him or herself, establishing trust with the bidders and readers. Just after I sold a 1957 Morgan four seater another one (seemingly a decent example, although without a lot of sparkle) appeared on BaT and sold for about half what mine did ? the buyer appeared only once or twice and didn?t offer much information and the best photos (no videos were offered) appeared to have been taken after the car was pushed out into the sunshine after the car had had a ten year rest and recent wipe-down. The buyer didn?t tell the car?s story in an appealing way so the bidders mostly had only the BaT description and online photos to judge the car and seller by. Having sold my car and that of a late friend I would feel much more confident in buying a car through a BaT auction than eBay or an unfamiliar car dealer. I would expect to pay more, but I could better judge the car?s condition and the seller?s reputation. I?ve got a very nice 1970 Mini woody wagon that I?ll probably post there in the next couple of months. References: Hi Brad, I did get your original message, excuse me for not writing then. I don't thing there is any need for the bumpers or cover. I removed them from the Spax on my TR3. It's a good idea to check the shock travel. You can not see the travel with the covers in place. Put a zip tie on the shock shaft and make sure the shock doesn't bottom out. It's good to know the suspension travel. The zip tie on my shocks has been pushed close to bottoming out. The Spax bumper would be contacted and I might never know it. If the zip tie goes missing or gets damaged, you know there is a problem with the shock bottoming and you can make an adjustment. I added spacers to extend the bottom shock mount for clearance. You can check the travel in your garage with the springs removed. You might find enough clearance to reinstall the bumpers. Leave the zip tie in place for continued monitoring. Dave H. I photo documented the car a long time ago and have not spoken with him since. I have one of the photos hanging in my office. The car was special. It had some kind of rare factory designated modifications (built specifically for racing or rally). He was a really nice fellow. His Obit says he started out as a teacher. But his ambitious racing stable, including a Birdcage, suggests that Tech company he and two partners started later on must have been successful. How sad, just like my racing partner, Bob Wismer, he lost a battle with cancer early in life. And the Obit suggests there does not appear to be any ties to Paula Jones' attorney, Joseph Cammarata. Incidentally, talking about Birdcage Masarati(s)...when Bob Wismer and I bought the Tornado Thunderbolt, the guy who sold it to us also had had a historically significant Birdcage Masarati that had set some sort of straightaway speed record at LeMan. He apparently was not aware of the impact such racing history has on a car's value, and he allowed the guy who bought if from him to get a really, really good deal. This made him gun shy and difficult for Bob Wismer and I to deal with. But it all worked out in the end. I just got the last of my to do list done on the race car and have been inventorying tools, spares, supplies, tires, etc, and getting the trailer hooked up to the RV just waiting for the next lap day where there?s no snow (snowed tonight in Denver, darn it) on the track. I?ve been watching some video of past races. This one is me mixing it up with a Fiat and a 914 (both mid-engine cars). Do you clutch when shifting in or out of overdrive? I do not. I go in to overdrive while on the throttle and out of overdrive while off the throttle. It?s smooth that way so I don?t use the clutch. I don?t seem to be shortening the overdrive?s life span with this method. What do you do? And yes, avoid column mounted overdrive switch. I routinely hit it by accident on the Street TR6 when autocrossing which is really annoying since it has a J Type that?s wired to work in all four gears (also a bad idea as it takes forever for a J Type to build up pressure and engage overdrive in first gear... about a 5-10 second delay) Dusty Nicholson 1971 Spitfire FP #4 Sent from my iPhone > On Feb 21, 2018, at 8:24 AM, Barr, Scott via Fot wrote: > > Concur. In this case reliability and operability are more important to me than keeping the car period correct. I can?t afford the time or money to repeatedly swap out a weak transmission that?s prone to failure like a stock box. Advice and Opinions most welcome. I have the close ratio gearset available from distributors of Moss Europe, which is really much superior to stock. Make sure you or your assembler properly clearances the bushings however - I had a spectacular third gear failure before the cause was determined when the gear seized on the shaft. The TR6 box is probably a 25 lb weight penalty, and you need to invert the clutch throwout bearing fork, make a bracket to support the slave cylinder in a new location, weld in a simple bracket to support the stock TR6 transmission rear mount, and modify the driveshaft, and a few other minor things. > > Good news is, the gearboxes are widely available for very cheap, the close ratio gears cost less than $1,000, a TR6 engine plate bolts right up to the GT6 engine or you can drill one more bolt hole in the GT6 plate to accept the TR6 box, and the shift lever is in exactly the same location. > > Read your club?s rules - SVRA allows this, or did, some clubs say you need the same number of forward gears, so you have the overdrive exemption that allows a five speed, but some clubs, for example VRG, require that your gearbox have the same external casting as stock, but internals are free. > > I happily traded vintage purity for reliability and a weight penalty, since I was replacing gearboxes every other race weekend. He sent me one for helping him with a description of the OD wiring on my A type. It does exactly as he designed it. Two bullet connectors and a ground. Easy peasy. Here?s the details from his email. I have no idea if the controllers are still available from him as it was eight years ago. The details: The controller is a very small (less than 1 cu in) three wire unit ( 2 bullet type connectors and a ground lug) and features two LEDs for verification and troubleshooting. Installation is straightforward and goes between the transmission tunnel kidney pads. The unit should work with all overdrives, though right now I'm focusing on the TR250/TR6 A and J type. The controller works with existing components - no extra switches are required. Operation of the overdrive is as before using the controller, but od is locked from engagement whenever the transmission is shifted into neutral. The overdrive will not re-engage until transmission is shifted back into an overdrive compatible gear ( 3rd or 4th - 2nd for A-type), and the overdrive switch is cycled off then on (or just on if previously off). I'm currently using this in my own TR6, and it makes a world of difference in the operation of the overdrive - something the factory should have done from the beginning, though the (practical) technology probably wasn't available at the time. I've included some pictures of the controller at : http://tinyurl.com/od-control Any questions - please ask. $45 plus shipping ($4.95 US). It?s a non-silicone fluid that?s compatible with DOT 3 and DOT 4 and has a higher boiling point. The Ford racing teams a few decades ago were seen using DOT 3 fluid when other teams were using DOT 4 fluids. Turns out the Ford-label DOT 3 fluid required a DOT 3 designation because of its lower wet boiling point ? but the dry boiling point was higher than most DOT 4 fluids of the day. Since they expected to replace the fluid after every race, the wet boiling point didn?t matter. How often are you replacing the Valvoline DOT 3/4 fluid? If it?s been too long it will be ?wet?, having absorbed atmospheric moisture, and this will cause it to boil at a significantly lower temperature. I bought a 1972 Spitfire race car about 7 years ago out of the CT area. Decent runner and such and have been having a good time with it. At the last event of 2017 it sort of felt "flat" checked all the normal stuff and just assumed she had a tired engine. As I always do at year end I siphoned all the race gas out of her that I can to let her rest on empty over the winter. When I did that I got a lot (and I mean a LOT) of red fibers in my 6 gallon jug. Didn't worry much about it as it was months to race season. Well time is near so I got out in the garage Saturday and started to check the ATL fuel cell out. As usual you can't see in the damn things especially if you are over 50 and lighting a match is a bad idea for extra light LOL!! So I pulled the multi bolt ring off the top of the cell. Guess what it's full of, NOTHING at all. Well it did have one lump of foam left about the size of a softball, in the rest of the bladder was sludge of red fibers in some left over race fuel. No wonder the car was running flat, every line and filter is chocked up with cell material. So what to do, pull the entire thing out and see what can be done. When I got it all out and drained and cleaned up a bit I found the manufacturer ID label on the bladder, guess when it was built 19 frigg'in 78!!! The race gods have plainly been protecting the stupid as I haven't had an accident where I needed the cell, thank goodness. Basically I had a steel can with a 40 year old plastic bladder in it and that is all. I guess the upside is now I know the car has history back to 1978 anyway HA HA! So my point in boring you all (and or letting you have ammunition to annoy me at the track) is check your dang fuel cell. I stated to think about it, the newest cell I got is approximately 9 years old and I never mess with them. Out of sight out of mind so they say. I have preached to others on safety and safety equipment and here I am being this dumb. So I just got off the phone with ATL and they are setting my diesel performance business up as a dealer for cells as we have had some customers have asked for fuel cells in the past in diesel race trucks. I am getting one for myself ASAP, if any of you are as dumb as I am and see that you have neglected your fuel cell to the point mine is, call me we'll help you out on a new one. Upon removal here?s what it looked like. All four sides were toast and the sides of the bladder literally fell apart when I pulled the bladder out of the metal box. There was no external damage to the box so this was all just fuel/bladder interaction/reaction and old age. See pics. I was a bit shaken to think I?d been naive enough to trust it and stupid enough not to check it more thoroughly. Driving a molotov cocktail in the boot is not a good idea. I read a receipt wrong that came with the car and thought the bladder had been replaced but it was the baffling that had been replaced. So if you may have a really old bladder (no old man jokes please) or don?t really know how old it is please learn from my mistake and check and replace if needed. I retained the metal outer shell and put in a new inner structure and foam. ATL recommended this fix. The fuel goes through a cleanable filter as soon as it leaves the cell so I can check if the foam is breaking down. Cheers, Bill Another thing to check if you're using a AFFF type fire system; they don't last forever. I talked with Pegasus last year and I think they said dump and refill the system every 3 years. I started vintage racing in 1980. At the time the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association (VSCDA) was a stickler on being 'era correct'. They wanted race cars in their grids to be 'just like the manufacturer built them. I think the first time I raced with Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA), they required a fuel cell. In an effort to keep the car looking era correct, I had a custom fuel cell built into the stock fuel tank behind the TR3's 'rear seat'. Doing so was not particularly expensive, and it avoided chopping up the floor of the boot. Of course, packaging and shipping was an issue. If I remember correctly, I did have to send it back twice (down through the years) when Tech Inspectors asked to have it re-certified. Again, the packaging and shipping issues, were greater than the recertification costs. And, of course, as time went by, the VSCDA had to change its position on race car preparation. There were clear safety issues to consider, plus most other sanctioning bodies were far more liberal in what was allowed and what was not. VSCDA had to do likewise, if it expected to attract entrants. At the last event of 2017 it sort of felt ?flat? checked all the normal stuff and just assumed she had a tired engine. As I always do at year end I siphoned all the race gas out of her that I can to let her rest on empty over the winter. When I did that I got a lot (and I mean a LOT) of red fibers in my 6 gallon jug. Didn?t worry much about it as it was months to race season. Well time is near so I got out in the garage Saturday and started to check the ATL fuel cell out. As usual you can?t see in the damn things especially if you are over 50 and lighting a match is a bad idea for extra light LOL!! So I pulled the multi bolt ring off the top of the cell. Guess what it?s full of, NOTHING at all. Well it did have one lump of foam left about the size of a softball, in the rest of the bladder was sludge of red fibers in some left over race fuel. No wonder the car was running flat, every line and filter is chocked up with cell material. So what to do, pull the entire thing out and see what can be done. When I got it all out and drained and cleaned up a bit I found the manufacturer ID label on the bladder, guess when it was built 19 frigg?in 78!!! The race gods have plainly been protecting the stupid as I haven?t had an accident where I needed the cell, thank goodness. I am getting one for myself ASAP, if any of you are as dumb as I am and see that you have neglected your fuel cell to the point mine is, call me we?ll help you out on a new one. They told me they would set me up and allow me wholesale pricing. Well stupid me that means different stuff to different people. I am in the diesel performance/maintenance and repair wholesale distribution business. So I assumed (read that last word a second time LOL) that their pricing would be similar to what I am accustomed to. WRONG!!!! So a few of you have asked for pricing that I have responded to and it was high. You can get it on Amazon at the same or lower price than I sent to you. So if you?re like me, that is what you will do. Money is money right!!!!!! So I went back to ATL and they told me if I do a $5000.00 buy in they will allow me an extra discount that would allow me to sell to you guys and save you some money too. Problem is I need 5K worth of orders to make it work. So if ANYONE out there wants a cell from ATL now is the time. I plan to sell to FOT and or any friends of FOT at cost to hopefully raise enough orders including mine to meet the 5K order. This is a onetime opportunity to get an ATL cell at a deep deal. A lot of you have gotten Auto Meter and ARP products from me in the past so you know how I work and offer to the FOT board. So holler at me. Mark, expect my call! Brad Eells Sent from my iPhone Amici... Our cell is 10 years old and it?s on my list to check. Curious, is it just as easy and cost effective to just replace the entire unit, can and all, or is it an easy enough job just to open up the can and only replace the cell. I?m not too concerned about the cost, 10 years on the unit isn?t bad, about $40 bucks a year I think. Considering all the other racing costs, that?s pretty good. Darn motel rooms are just about $150 a night now, no matter where you go! I bought a 1972 Spitfire race car about 7 years ago out of the CT area. Decent runner and such and have been having a good time with it. I am getting one for myself ASAP, if any of you are as dumb as I am and see that you have neglected your fuel cell to the point mine is, call me we?ll help you out on a new one.
