The dehumidifier in my basement has suddenly started freezing up. Solid ice
on the coils. It's a Frigidaire and is about five years old. Why would this
happen?

I was just wonder how most people mount their vertical air compressors.

I've always left mine on the pallet it was shipped on and that seem to
work well.

Today they delivered the new monster compressor and it's huge. The pallet
it's on is much larger then what would be needed.

is it better to mount them on wood for free standing or is it better to
bolt it down? FWIW, I'm putting it on an asphalt floor (inside.) But I
can pour concrete if a pad is better.

It just seems to me that having the wood helps absorbed vibrations.

What's the 'correct' answer, and what is best practices?

TIA!!!

Sent from my Commodore 64 on a 2400 Baud Modem.

Errors-To: shop-talk-bounces@autox.team.net

When this happened to me, it was too cold and humid. I had this problem
when the area got below about 60 degrees. My initial solution was to
turn the control to a higher humidity level so the dehumidifier ran
shorter periods of time. Eventually I ended up getting a better
dehumidifier.

They sell special dehumidifiers for unheated space like basements and
crawlspaces. I believe they are designed to not allow the coil to get
as cold, though this time of the year, I wouldn't expect things to be
too cold.

After you let it defrost, check the fan to make sure it still works
well. Their should be good airflow across the coils. Also if there is
a filter, make sure it is clean and there is nothing blocking the air flow.

I sank three lead anchors in the concrete, put some isolators over
them, and set the compressor on that. The nuts are set just loose, so
the compressor can wiggle a little, but it can't fall down.

And yes, I had it on the pallet for almost a year, but then I built a
lean-to and put it out there.

is it better to mount them on wood for free standing or is it better to =
bolt it down? FWIW, I'm putting it on an asphalt floor (inside.) But I =
can pour concrete if a pad is better.=20

It just seems to me that having the wood helps absorbed vibrations.=20

What's the 'correct' answer, and what is best practices?=20

These work basically the same as an air conditioner, right? When an AC unit=
ices up it is because it is low on freon. (we had this happen at work this=
past week and the water from all the ice melt shut down the elevator that =
had the electricals in the room below this AC unit.)

When mine did this I figured it was the thermocouple. Replaced it and it =
still froze up. This was the #1 fix so maybe you'll have better luck. At =
least make sure it's in the right location.

Hey gang,

I know this is off topic, but I was wondering if anyone knows what type

quick question

I need to re-seal a section of 110+ year old hard wood floor. When we sande=
d, re-stained and did poly, I didn't do the poly correct. I'd like to redo =
the poly on about a heavy traffic, 4' square area (for now) so it is totall=
y sealed.

I plan on buffing the poly between (several+ thick) coats. If I buy an auto=
motive, electric orbital polisher (for future use on WeeBeasty), will it be=
ok for use on this flooring application? And if so, what attachment would =
work best for this emergency fix?

Thanks!!

To answer my own question and in case anyone was interested, I did find a f=

Errors-To: shop-talk-bounces@autox.team.net

I was mowing my neighbor's pasture with my NH TC30 and brush hog the
other weekend when my hydraulics went away. I figured I had a leak
somewhere and took the tractor home and parked it and checked the
hydraulic fluid, and yep, it was off the bottom of the dipstick. I
didn't see an obvious leak, and had stuff to do the last few weekends so
today I finally got to it. I added a couple of gallons of Quicklift
(which was way too much, but at least I knew I had enough) and cycled
the loader and 3 point a couple of times. The hydraulic pump was very
noisy and the loader and 3 point went up very slowly and jerky. Great,
I've probably wiped out the hydraulic pump.

I went on line and found that a new hydraulic pump retails for $550 from
New Holland, although imagine I could probably find one cheaper with a
little digging. I then surfed through a couple of tractor forums and
found one or two people with the same problem; they said there's a
rubber coupling on the pump suction line (probably for vibration
isolation) that can get knocked off and cause the problem. I climbed
under the tractor and found the coupling/hose and sure enough the
coupling was pushed back and kinked and the hydraulic pump wasn't
getting good suction. I put the coupling back in place and re-tightened
the hose clamps, and everything works fine. Then I drained about a
gallon or so of Quicklift out of the sump and got the level back where
it needed to be.

I remember while mowing one section of the field I was turning around at
the end of a row and got the tractor stuck. Turns out it was high
centered on a log round that the neighbor's idiot son had probably
dragged out into the pasture for who knows what. That's probably what
knocked the coupling loose.

I guess I'll have to finish mowing the pasture this weekend.

Dave's talks about tractor hydros...

Thanks for sharing with us. It's always nice to find and easy fix.

With that, there may be an easy fix for my problem. I bought a rock rake
for the front of my tractor (45HP Sub compact). It works great, too
great, as it really motivated me to clear some heavily overgrown areas.
This rake just rips up everything and is perfect for the task.

The problem is, that now my front loader seems to go up and down slower.
Note, the rock rake mounts to the loader like a bucket, so when it's
pushing, all the load is on the front loader (as would be if I were
digging with it.)

Everything works fine otherwise and there are no leaks. It's just that
the loader goes up and down slower. I was thinking I bend a ram or
piston. Any ideas?

Sent from my Commodore 64 on a 2400 Baud Modem.

Subject: [Shop-talk] Ideas for projects involving a vertical lawn mower
	engine?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: shop-talk-bounces@autox.team.net

Tangentially shop-related, I suppose.

Last week I replaced my 15yo push mower. The old deck was more rust
than steel these days but the 6HP B&S engine is still in reasonably good
shape. Trying to come up with potential re-uses for a small
vertical-shaft engine before I sell or donate it.

The only things I've come up with are things I already have (generator,
heavy-duty weed-eater on wheels, pressure washer).

Any ideas?

Those work well for a log splitter, or a sprayer as well. I had a crazy
idea for a gas powered air conditioner a few years back, but I am not sure
6 horse would be enough for that application.

If you have need to clean large areas of concrete slab, you can recreate the mower, but replace the blade with a bar and secure a couple wire scrub brushes to it. Slow the engine down so it is safer & try to balance it as well as possible. We built one of these for cleaning parking lots prior to carnivals & it did well cleaning the floor of a soft drink warehouse. Water is necessary but don't add too much

Pat

Depends on what you want to cool. If you can get an honest 5 hp, that
should be good for 5 tons (60,000 btuh IIRC) or so; enough for a fair-sized
home (roughly 3000 square feet depending on a lot of factors like
insulation, where you're located, etc.)

Run the exhaust through a hot water heater, and you'd have hot water too <g>
