An easy way to do this is to use a float switch in the tank that will turn
on the transmitter when the water level gets to the desired set point. You
might be able to just put a 12v car horn, the float switch and a battery at
the tank to alert the family when the water is low. As someone else
suggested, a solar charger would be a good fit for this project.

Peace,
Pat

Subject: [Shop-talk] Remote tank level sensing.

Hi. A friend asked me to come take a look when their water system failed
recently. Problem was easy to diagnose and fix (a leak caused the tanks to
drain out faster than they filled up. Leak fixed and the tanks refilled
within a few days) and I [foolishly] offered to help set something up so it
won't happen again as catastrophically.

The situation: there are some spring fed storage tanks about 50-100 feet
away from the nearest source of power. They typically remain full or nearly
so and there is a system to keep them full (manual float valves).
I would like to add some level sensors in the tank to indicate when the tank
is less than 1/2-3/4 full (something might be awry) and another when the
tank is almost empty to disable the (remote from the tanks, but located near
power) booster pumps to prevent them from running dry and possibly
overheating.

The most straightforward would be to put sensors in the tanks and run wires
to relays at the pumps and indicators, but that would require trenching.
Anyone know of a good source for some battery operated transmitters and
battery or wired receivers? These are rather slow changing signals, so
something that transmitted only at a change or had a transmit interval that
could be set to a long time would be better for battery life (but changing
batteries isn't that big a deal, just a pain).

Thank, o all knowing list!!

http://www.electrosense.com.au/ sells the "Aquagauge Wireless Water Level

Out of curiosity, what OS does the team.net server run? Do you
know what vulnerability was exploited?

Subject: [Shop-talk] Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: shop-talk-bounces@autox.team.net
Status: RO

Yesterday, I rotated the tires on my 2013 Volt and went to 'relearn' the
tire pressure sensors. 2011 and many other models allow you to do this
with a strong magnet or by letting air out of the tire during the 'learn'
mode.

It appears that this model doesn't allow either and it can only be done
with a tool.

I ended up buying this one...

(note, I'm not adverse to buying new tools, but really?)

My question is, will there be a 'universal' tool for these TPMS systems?
It's my understanding that they are being mandated and I'd hate to have to
buy a new tool for each manufacture.

Anyone else have any other experiences?

I have looked at that page and it's great info, but I don't have enough
electrical knowledge to know what to look for. If I found the offending
part I could replace it, but unless there's spooge all over a cap, I'm
not sure I'd know what "leaky" was. I'm guessing the power supply caps
are the two big blue ones near the transformer? No leaks there....

I didn't crank up the volume, and also to Roland's point I did stop
using the four 4 ohm speakers after blowing 3 fuses:-)

Can these types of problems be tested with a multimeter or does it
require a scope?

Generally, the term "leaky" refers to a capacitor that is passing DC current (which they aren't supposed to do), rather than a
"spooge" leak. Depending somewhat on the cap and the meter, you can usually get a good idea by disconnecting from the circuit and
then "trying" to measure the resistance of the capacitor, making sure to observe polarity. Start by shorting the capacitor legs
together (to make sure it is discharged), then connect the meter across the cap. You should see the resistance reading start out
low and then rise rapidly to infinity or nearly so. Also do a visual for any signs of distortion, like end caps that bulge
outwards.

Or, as noted on the web site, there is something to be said for just replacing the power supply caps. $60 seems like a lot of money
though, unless you are interested in it as a collector's item. Old stereo receivers are pretty cheap around here; $10-$15 at a yard
sale will get you one that just needs cleaning and maybe a switch or control replaced.

> Can these types of problems be tested with a multimeter or does it
> require a scope?

You can do some checks, like the above check for capacitor leakage and a rough check for whether a transistor is shorted or not. A
bipolar transistor out of circuit should act like it contains two diodes, meaning you can see it conduct (resistance less than
infinity) for one polarity applied between the base and emitter, or base and collector; and not conduct (infinite resistance) for
the opposite polarity. For an NPN transistor, it should conduct when the base is positive to the emitter; or the collector is
positive to the base. For PNP, it's emitter positive to the base, or base positive to collector.

This works with most meters, not necessarily all of them. If the meter shows open in both directions on both pairs of leads, then
it's worth checking the transistor with some other method. You may have a meter that uses less than 0.7 volts to measure
resistance.

Like Peter said, though, I would certainly start at the power supply, since the problem affects both channels equally. If one or
both of the caps are bad, the diodes may be popped as well.

Try a woodworking store like Rockler or Woodcraft.

Subject: [Shop-talk] Computer sound problem
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: shop-talk-bounces@autox.team.net
Status: RO

Last year I assembled a budget tower system from Newegg to replace an
aging HP system with a bad HDD. I would provide a link to the
motherboard but for some reason Newegg won't let me see my 2013 order
history. It will show 2012 and 14 just fine but not 2013...

Anyway, the sound quit. The little speaker icon in the lower right hand
corner of the screen (Win 7) has a red and white x on it and when you
put the mouse pointer it says the headphones or speakers are not plugged
in, which they are. I have tried two different sets of speakers through
both the front and rear jacks. I even bought a little USB dongle with
speaker and mic jacks on the front, but that doesn't work, either.
Should I get a cheap sound card and try that? Any other suggestions?
This is an inexpensive motherboard with all the sound, video, etc, all
on the main board. This is the first time I have messed around with
computer guts since the old XT/AT days when you got add-on cards for
just about everything.

Another feature is an annoying scan line that goes up across the display
about every two seconds or so. It's not real obvious, but annoying.

And no, I can't find the documentation from the computer stuff. Only
that it was some kind of AMD quad core processor. I can find ALL of the
documentation for the Seequa Chameleon I bought in 1982, but not for the
computer I bought last year...

Thanks
Dave

She went with a water-based green paint, sort of under-applied. It's a
rough matte green now, and since the paint is not all that waterproof at
this stage, it will probably grow into the real thing with time. You
should see it at the picnic after Wheels & Wings.

Hi all.

I need to install one of these on my stroker. I've done a little searching but
what I've found so far all looks way too big. I am hoping to mount something
small right behind the rocker cover, maybe using the head stud at the back of
the engine, so it would need to be pretty small.

Thoughts please.

I sent this to the shop talk list as I know quite a lot of you have classic
cars.

Thanks!
tim

Subject: [Shop-talk] Fwd: Audio receiver repair?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: shop-talk-bounces@autox.team.net
Status: RO

Sent a few days ago, but it never appeared on the list:

You don't bother to test, you just replace all of the shiny silvery
capacitors. They are the ones that don't have stripes on them : )>

IMHO, your amp was likely in this condition before you plugged it in,
you plugging in the wrong impedance speakers didn't matter at all...

Swapping out expired components is a big thing in the guitar amplifier
world, so you might take it by your local amplifier repair guy. I am in
Austin, so perhaps not typical, but there are three within about ten
minutes from me. Walk in, ask him if he can replace the leaky caps and
put the circuit diagram in front of him, and see what he says...

Old guitar amps are worth a fortune, but they all need this type of
updating, so there is a business in doing this. It is interesting to me
that this guy is doing it with classic audio amps. Like this guy,
people sell kits of the parts needed to refresh a specific Fender. Of
course, in that world distortion is a good thing, but the approach is
the same.

The issue is that this can only be done with components of a certain
age, specifically, before circuit board manufacturing advances made the
circuitry too small for our fat fingers to work. Your amp might be too
modern and miniaturized... If you are committed to a high end solution,
as you were when you bought the thing 20 or 30 years ago, then I think
the guy's trade-in makes sense. If you are just looking for music for
the shop, and only are dealing with this because this box happened to be
on the shelf, I would suggest a boom-box from a garage sale. In fact, I
will swap you a big old boom box for your dead amp, how about it?

Since we are on shop-talk, I was pleased to find a guy back in the early
nineties who was doing this cap refreshing service for the fuel
injection circuit board for my '75 450SEL...

It's possible that it's a Windows problem. To confirm one way or the other
you can boot from a Linux "live CD" (I use knoppix but there are others, just
google "Linux live CD") and see if you have sound. The general idea is to
download a Linux live CD ISO image, burn it to a CD or DVD, and boot from it,
without touching your Windows installation.

The ISO idea would help to test the hardware.
I'm not Win7 saavy (and don't care to be) but you may want to look into
reinstalling or updating the sound driver. I'm sure there are guides to this
on the googles. Windows might try to auto detect and reinstall a new copy of
the one you have or find a new one for you on the internet. If the hardware is
unknown it may not be easy.
For the scan line, that could also be a driver issue or the monitor (crt, I
assume?) is going bad. Or maybe the refresh rate is off in Windows. You
could try some of the reset stuff on the monitor menu, degauss, etc.

If you want info on the components run Speccy from Piriform. It
generates a blizzard of detail.

Sorry I can't help further than that, my knowledge of computers is based
on trying to stop the smoke escaping from the wires...

I need to install one of these on my stroker. I've done a little searching but
what I've found so far all looks way too big. I am hoping to mount something
small right behind the rocker cover, maybe using the head stud at the back of
the engine, so it would need to be pretty small.

Thoughts please.

I sent this to the shop talk list as I know quite a lot of you have classic
cars.

Thanks!

It is old enough to be repaired by me, though I may just send it to the guy as
a parts amp.

If you're near Boston, and it has an AUX in, sure! If not, it's probably more
expensive to ship the units than to find a working used one. It is just for
shop music; all I need in an AUX port for the ipod.

Thanks all for the insight, especially the definition of "leaky" :-)

Well, it looks like I got it fixed or it fixed itself....Thanks for all
the replies.

Someone mentioned to try double clicking on the speaker icon and then
following the steps to see if it could repair itself. That's what
worked. I could swear I tried that once before, and right-clicking
didn't get me any help, either, but finally it went through the self
repair process and I can hear annoying Youtube videos again. Thanks to
all for the suggestions and help.

So when you say oil breather tank, you are talking about a PCV breather?
Something that takes crankcase fumes from the block and possibly valve
cover(s) into a tank and let's them escape to the air?
Summit/Jegs will probably have the best selection and price, then you can also
pick up any fittings/hose/etc you need to install it. I run one made by
Integrated Engineering on my non-emissions tested 85 VW Golf turbo. It has
the internal baffles, drain valve, AN -8 adapter threads, breather filter,
probably holds a quart, maybe less. Don't go too small, or it will fill up
quick. Trying to imagine what an overfilled catch tank spilling into an
engine bay would do. yeah, no.
Some have a metal mesh inside the tank to help separate the fumes and condense
the water from them better. Install wise, it's been said that keeping it near
the engine to keep it warm helps to evap the water a bit. Google for other
tips on install/setup. Originally had mine hooked to the exhaust to pull a
vacuum, but made a mess on the rear of the vehicle. This car has no cat, so
no danger there. Spat some nice flames from time to time ;-)

Off Topic question.

Anyone have a TR2 or TR3? I am wondering if the dash mounted rear view
mirror might fit my MGA. If you could reply with the distance-apart of
the mirror mounting holes I can decide if that mirror is a viable
option for me.

The reason I ask is I am vintage racing my MGA. Part of the roll bar is
right above the rear toneau panel. The stock MGA mirror does not give
me a good view behind me. The TR2-TR3 mirror has a much longer stem and
should enable me to see over the bar.

A few years ago I put a separator on the pipe between the valve cover
PCV and a supercharger port on my Roush Mustang. I was getting
fuel/aircharge contamination when I put my foot down. It is running 15
LBS of boost at WOT which was also sucking a fair amount of oil from the
cam cover. The little separator I bought looks (is) a small glass
bottle with a bronze filter and in and out pipe threaded ports. I
suppose the amount of oil you would collect is dependent on the
condition of the engine and how much air you are sucking up the pipe.
The filter looks just like the oil separator that might be on an air
compressor. I have to empty mine after two tanks of fuel or one good
romp on the back roads. Here is a link to the one that I use on my
beast that has worked as expected.
http://shop.davadmotorsports.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=4&zenid=6v4e56q65otjic9vona9jiqto6
If I had known then what I know now I would have picked up one locally
for probably half the price but it did come with Ford quick connect hose
fittings.

Eric,

I measure 1.125" on my 1960 TR3A (TS60,xxx), although I do have some serious
internal conflicts with helping out an MG racer. <grin/sarcasm>

This was measured on the car and it's all deep under the windshield, but
that number should be pretty darn close.

Subject: [Shop-talk] OT - TR2 or TR3 question

Off Topic question.

Anyone have a TR2 or TR3? I am wondering if the dash mounted rear view
mirror might fit my MGA. If you could reply with the distance-apart of
the mirror mounting holes I can decide if that mirror is a viable
option for me.

The reason I ask is I am vintage racing my MGA. Part of the roll bar is
right above the rear toneau panel. The stock MGA mirror does not give
me a good view behind me. The TR2-TR3 mirror has a much longer stem and
should enable me to see over the bar.

TIA,
Eric Russell

I just...can't help myself:

If it's an MG, why do you need a rear-view mirror? All the competition will
be in front of you. :-)

I guess...lappers?

(Sorry, sorry.)

Off Topic question. Anyone have a TR2 or TR3? I'd like to know the
distance-apart of the dash mounted rear view mirror's screws.

My reason for asking is that I am wondering it it'd fit my MGA. I am vintage
racing my MGA but the roll cage has a bar right above the rear tonneau panel.
The TR2 TR3's mirror has a longer stem which would allow me a better view.

TIA,

Hi all

I want to try to seal the windscreen on my wife's Toyota. I am hoping to do it
myself and save a couple hundred dollars.

Can I use any clear silicone rated for outdoor usage or is there a specific
product that one or more of you might recommend for automotive use?

Thanks!

Subject: [Shop-talk] Wide mulching mower
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: shop-talk-bounces@autox.team.net
Status: RO

I've been using a 21" mower on my Illinois lawn (blue grass) for too many
decades now, and especially in the humid summer it's a killer. Our yard is
really too small for a lawn tractor - I have a 42" deck tractor but haven't
used it here in years. On top of that, my Snapper with the Ninja blade is
marginal at mulching, which is my cutting method of choice. It's got a 6.75
HP Briggs, but it's still not enough to properly chew up the grass and not
leave a trail in spots where the grass is a little long. And I mow at least
weekly. It actually does about as well just side-discharging the grass,
which I do sometimes. I seldom bag the grass.

Toro recently came out with a 30" walk-behind mower, but the reviews aren't
the best and I already own a disappointment. Snapper makes (or used to?) a
30" rider that stores standing on end, which is great, but I have no idea
whether it's any better at mulching than their 22" models.

My neighbor actually has an excellent mulching-only mower. But it's a
10-year-old no-name el cheapo from MTD that isn't available any more. It
just happens to do a fantastic job of mulching even tall and wet grass.

So.. Is there a good mulching mower available today? Preferably wider than
22", must be self-propelled, and I don't necessarily need to bag or side
discharge as long as it mulches well. Walk-behind or rider.

Thanks!
Karl

Hi
Question for the computer geeks........
My Belkin Wi-Fi Router is a number of years old.
Itbs rated at 2.4GHZ and 802.11g capabilities. Is it
worth going with the newer models to try and get
increased area coverage and building penetration?
Should I be looking at 2.4 & 5 GHz dualband units?
Do I need to update anything else to utilize an
upgraded unit? Should I be looking at go with a model
with 802.11ac capability?
Super thanks for any assistance.

Steve-

Newer wireless technologies (like 802.11n and 802.11ac) do offer somewhat
improved coverage over 802.11g, but they are not a magic bullet. Much
depends on their design. I recommend units with multiple detachable
external antennas.

"High powered" access points also are not necessarily an improvement, as
very often you end up with a strong signal from the access point, but the
client is no more powerful - you can "hear" the access point, but not
vice-versa. They can be helpful in locations where the noise floor is high,
though best practice is to use the quietest channel you can. 2.4GHz is
often very congested, but 5GHz most often is quiet. 5GHz does not have the
range of 2.4GHz, but much depends on the local environment.

If you are trying to extend wireless to a remote location, I would do that
in one of a couple of ways:

1) You can focus the available signal in the direction of the desired
location, if that is practical. This is dependent on your wireless
equipment. Some access points have detachable antennas, with dual antennas
on a single band. One antenna is "primary" and the other "secondary".
Either of these (typically omnidirectional short whips) can be replaced
with a short piece of coax attached to a directional antenna, oriented
towards the location that needs additional coverage. (It won't do much for
you to have both antennas set up this way, as it doesn't get more signal
there, it just provides diversity, which can mitigate signal shadows.). If
you don't have multiple antennas for a single band (e.g. one antenna for
*each* band), putting the directional antenna in place can remove coverage
where you have it now.

2) You can add a wireless repeater, if you can locate it where the existing
access point and the desired location both will receive sufficient signal
strength. This will slow down your wireless somewhat, however.

3) You can add a supplemental access point at the location that needs
better service. So long as the security parameters and SSID are identical,
most modern devices will seamlessly hop among the access points as signal
strength changes. Doing this, however, requires connectivity at that
location, which might be delivered via an ethernet cable, a separate
wireless connection, or a network-over-powerline adapter.

My property is too big for a single access point (and the aluminum siding
on my house prevents much of my wireless signal from getting outside), so I
have three access points running at my house in order to ensure strong
signals both inside and outside. I do like the current Asus and Netgear
equipment. At home I use Mikrotik and Netgear hardware.

Let me know if I can explain further.

-Peter
