I have been told that I should never use synthetic oil in my 235. However, I understand that Valvoline Restore & Protect works wonders for cleaning and restoring engines. Is it safe to use in a 1957 235?

Thanks!

Don=E2=80=99t know about Restore and Protect. But modern oil standards =
do not include lead or ZDDP additives which were there to protect flat =
tappet engines. I always use Valvoline VR1 non synthetic racing oil. It =
contains sufficient levels of ZZDP and low levels or low sudsing =
detergents. =20

Just what I do,

I heard that the reason we don't want to use synthetic in the older engine
tech is due to the use of cork in gaskets and the larger tolerances between
machined surfaces and bearing surfaces allows for the much higher viscosity
oil to let bearing slip or rotate.

If you have heavy carbon buildup the additives, combined with a good ole
fashion Italian tune up (i.e. give it some spirited driving at decent
revs), sounds be fine.

I would change the oil back to some high zinc content Dino juice after
4-500 miles.
