I can't quickly find a period photo of this seal but believe there is a good photo which clearly shows the profile in one of the standard reference books. The seal was also a soft sponge section but I don't believe it had a "live skin" outer covering. Now if someone wants to take on the task of reproducing a J, F, D, L, K firewall seals that are to the correct dimension and shore hardness and do not require that the firewall be cut down so that the bonnet will close...??? The seal is 1" X 1" with flat bottom and sides and the top is similar to the letter "M" but round peaks and valley rather than points. I had a piece made years ago for my black PB by a guy who worked at Copper Tire. It's a bit too solid - as is the current J2, etc seal mat'l from England. It should be open cell sponge with smooth skin. Unfortunately, my friend got in trouble because it took an hour to extrude this stuff and I only barely got enough for my PB. I think I have a few inches left over if anybody wants to make a new die. The Register caters for OHC Morris Minors - 1928 to 1931. We will be gathering at noon for a pub lunch at the Royal Oak at Barrington, near Cambridge on Saturday lunchtime and then taking a tour of the local countryside to arrive at the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden aerodrome in time for their sunset air display in the evening. There is a combined VSCC/VMR dinner afterwards at Shuttleworth House, and on Sunday, there are combined VSCC/VMR driving tests at RAF Henlow, some 5 miles south of Old Warden. All MMM owners are cordially invited to join us, and would be made most welcome - particularly at the Royal Oak on Saturday lunchtime, where the pub faces the largest village green in England - so there will be plenty of parking space! At the very least, it would be good to have a few M Types in attendance. Full details of the weekend's activities can be found on our website at www.vmr.f2s.com (If anyone can publicise this event more widely in MGCC MMM and Vintage Registers, I would be most grateful.) I originally had a batch of 6 J type and 6 P type made and these sold out - they were only advertised in the MG Octagon Car Club 'Bulletin'. I then had another batch of 6 P type made and I have 2 left at #192 (pounds sterling) each. They are standard P type camshafts. As regards the P type cranks and rods I do not yet have details but will come up with a specification and approx. price. This may take a little time as I'm pretty busy at the moment but I will get back to you. Certainly he has one on his P. If you are looking for an ORIGINAL seal, I have one on my PB Airline, but I'm afraid it has melted away to almost an unrecognizable state. The original Sorbo rubber (British foam rubber) did not stand up well to heat, so most often you will find they have literally melted. Let me know what you might need from mine (assuming there ios something useful to be gained from this runny lump of rubber). I am working with the SVW Group in making up a batch for the V and W's, and if it is the same, we can get on board and have some made for us. All we need is a sample from which we can take measurements. Graham Arrondelle, having produced six great issues of the Triple-M Register Yearbook, has decided that it is time to retire his blue pencil. I feel honoured that he has asked me to take over the editorship and I am looking forward to putting together future editions of this special publication. My wife and I own a PA, I grew up in the shadow of the Abingdon factory and I work in publishing, but I shan't bore you with stuff about me. What I want is articles, photographs and new talent for the 2001 yearbook! Have you got any pictures, or any great tales to tell about this year's fortieth anniversary celebrations? Have you discovered that your car has a fascinating history that others might find interesting? Are you an overseas member who would like to tell us something about the MMM scene in your country? Might you have unseen photographs of the pre-war MG factory, or of cars in motor sport? Do you have a particularly interesting restoration story to tell? Do you have any photographs of our sort of cars in every day use when they were new? How about epic journeys undertaken in MMM cars? Might you like to do some research on the dealer who supplied your car when new, or the garage closest to your home? Could you write an article about one of MG's suppliers, or work on MMM cars that was done away from Abingdon - maybe you know someone who worked at one of these factories? These are just some of the subjects that I would like to see covered in the upcoming and other future issues of the Yearbook. Do not be daunted. You do not have to be a professional writer or a MMM committee member to contribute something really worthwhile. You might not think that the history of your car is of much interest when compared with the history of a famous K3, or you might not think that the scraps of research you have done into MG are of much significance against the work of the likes of Wilson McComb, but you would be wrong. We must keep the yearbook, and the MMM MG, alive by delving ever deeper into the technical details, development and social history of our cars, and into the lifeblood of the hobby as it exists today. I want to hear from you. You can do it! Write to me at: 10 Park Close Didcot Oxfordshire OX11 0AA United Kingdom Ring (or fax) me on +44 1235 819967 or send me an email at nmwright74@hotmail.com I would also be happy to discuss ideas or follow up suggestions for articles with people you might suggest I look forward to hearing from you!
