One of my interesting finds in the always ongoing detective work with the car was the was the bushing set up. I had found all stock rubber in the back and was expecting the same in the front. What I found was a nicely engineered solid bushing set up, with a pressed in bronze sleeve and then then a steel insert sleeve. The bushings were located by what I now know to be a brass/bronze DX 08 Split Bush Washer, one on one side of the sleeve and 2 on the other. The bolt and nut are AN at 7/16", stock is 3/8". The bushings did show some wear so I want to replace them. Turns out the only source I can find is in the UK...luckily they sell on EBay, though the price is quite steep. Kas is likely to be very familiar with this set up...just wondered if others are...and what is the unfair advantage of the DX 08 Split Bush Washer? Hey FOT, Found this shock in beautiful metallic blue mounted up front on the Spitfire. What I found most interesting is the aluminum spacer rings that are evident to control spring rate? ? Anyone recognize this set up? Interestingly, the Koni shocks I bought to replace these are not adjustable for spring rate but are at the exact same location as the shocks that came off the car. I had 1 Koni in the spares box, must have been replaced somewhere along the way... Interesting (at least to me) to note, but at Blackhawk Farms Raceway the last weekend of this month we will see the Midwestern Council of Sports Car Club's Annual Spring Driver's School, followed by a day of wheel to wheel racing on Sunday hosted by one of the member clubs, Lakeshore Sports Car Club. This is further significant because it marks sixty years of Council motorsports activity in the Midwest. Recent ties to the FOT involve the 2017 KASNER CUP, which was held at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. Choreographed by the FOT, held as part of VSCDA's annual Blackhawk Vintage Classic, that event was actually staffed and run by the Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs. Often referred to locally as, "SCCA-Lite", Council membership includes some of the best people on God's green earth. Happy Birthday to the Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs! I noticed that the stock TR6 block has a chamfer in the casting on one side but not on the other - it looks a little "tight" in there compared to the stock rods but that's expected due to the difference in the cross section of the H beam... I'm just trying to verify if it's accepted practice to mill the pocket there on the side without the chamfer to make sure there's adequate clearance. It's also a real beeeeyatch to actually see in there and even more of a pain to measure. Looks like a job for modelling clay, I would presume. Feedback and suggestions are most appreciated. Find any fire and emergency equipment supplier in your yellow pages and take the bottle to them. They?ll check it out, reload it, hang a new tag on it. It?s something that should be done every couple of years or so ? ask them how often when you take it in, but I guarantee 13 years is too long! It's been in the car since I bought it in 2005 and is still good (unscrewed the bottle and checked the cable pull as well). My question is, how should it be mounted? It's currently horizontal, which makes me think it's going to discharge liquid if I ever have to use it. Should it be mounted vertically or it it designed to dump liquid out which will then vaporize and push out the air, strangulating the fire? Its down side is that everything gets slippery but the big upside is that if you end up directly over a pool of fuel it will smother it and suppress the vapors whether it?s on fire or not. I want the longest possible period to extricate myself (assuming I can get out on my own). http://www.coldfire.biz I didn?t want to use dry chemical (harder to clean up and it will corrode aluminum) or Halon or its replacement, Halotron, because although it excels at putting out a fire, it works best in an enclosed area and once the wind blows away the agent it can?t stop a reignition. I had planned on sending out a short 'Happy Birthday Team Net' back on April 11th, the 27th anniversary of the domain going on the air.? But things happen, and a while after we had some nice late winter snowstorms hit the Salt Lake area.? That's where I live, that's where the server sits. The storms caused some power outages over the course of a day or two, some short, some longer than the UPS could keep the server running.? Not good, graceful recovery did NOT happen.? Anyway, it took some time for things to get sorted, for the mail queue to untangle itself and send out messages with only a few hours delay, not 30 - 35 - 40 hours. So we are almost back to normal.? One of the items I was going to mention in the planned birthday message is that the searchable archives at http://www.team.net/archive have been broken for some time. Well, they still work for the content already in them, but they are not adding new content on a real time basis as they should. A goal for the near future is to figure out what broke them, fix it and get them updated.? For the meantime, though, I updated the link at the bottom of messages to reflect the less user friendly default Mailman archives. Computers can be so much fun. mjb. So a good company deserves mention. I installed a set of ride leveling air bags from Air Lift on my 06 Ford F-150 Supercrew shorty after I bought it. With the bed loaded and the race trailer hooked up it was down at the back. The bags come in a nice kit and are easy to install and air up when it is time to go. These bags have been in place at least 8 years. Coming back from CA pulling a trailer last weekend I noticed a rattle. On inspection it turned out that bolts on left side holding bag in place had come loose and one had broken which then sheared the air hose fill fitting when bracket moved. My fault for not keeping an eye on thing as I had heard a rattle a few weeks before. When I called Air Lift for replacement parts I found all the individual parts in the kit were available. I figured I would also change the bag while I had it apart. When my order was sorted the customer service guy put me on hold and when he came back he said they would cover all the parts under the warranty and ship them to me for free! That is about $120 in parts that they didn't have to cover. So if your rear end needs a lift, truck that is can't help with your rear end (go to the gym!), Air Lift deserves a shot at your business. Have a great racing season! Ken -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Don't remember if the brand was Air Lift, but I too installed those rubber air balloon ride levelers on my One Ton Chevy Cargo Van tow vehicle. They worked great. Allowed more trailer packing/stowing options and still, after a couple of squirts of air up/down, allowed for a dead level towing set up. Highly recommended. Not expensive. Relatively simple to install. Bill Dentinger -----Original Message----- From: Kenneth Knight via Fot To: FOT Sent: Thu, Apr 26, 2018 9:28 am Subject: [Fot] Shout Out to Air Lift We all use parts and services for our race cars, street cars and tow vehicles. That is about $120 in parts that they didn?t have to cover. So if your rear end needs a lift, truck that is can?t help with your rear end (go to the gym!), Air Lift deserves a shot at your business. Have a great racing season! This is a Long Story for the FOT, but directed mostly at old farts who were actually around in the mid-20th century. These are people who might actually understand how the 'Smitty Flow Through' glasspac attempted to provide proof to the local police that your car actually had a muffler back in the day. "See, officer. There it is. That's my muffler." Newbees, who can't relate, might want to hit their Delete Key now. Back in 1957, when I was a senior in High School, my paternal Grandmother (God Rest Her Soul), who was also my God-mother, had given me $350 as a graduation present. $350 was the most money that I knew existed back then. I did not know that my Grandmother had $350, much less that she might consider giving it to me. And it was a good five months before I was scheduled to graduate. Talk about opportunity based on an Act of Faith. Anyway, I took the money and I bought a very, very used, but very nice looking 1951 Ford convertible. It was powder blue, and had an extended rear deck and continental tire kit. I shaved the front deck, added eye lids to the headlights, and blue dot lenses (illegal) to the tail lights. I added fender skirts and I replaced the rag top's rear window (several times). I also lowered the rear end about two inches (to a point where that extended rear deck would drag on driveway ramps). Out on the West Coast they were lowering the front ends. Here in the Midwest...we were lowering the rear ends. But that car looked GOOD! It looked like a Classic Lead Sled. It was fantastic, and in my pre-Triumph, Bebopper days, duck-tailed Hollywood haircut...the whole nine yards. This is the car I used to court Shirley Jean. Her long pony tail used to flop in the breeze as we tooled down the street with the top down. That's all the Good News about that car. There is some Bad News too. This car had a Ford six cylinder engine and Fordamatic. It was so slow, that Roger Bannister broke the four minute mile before it did. And it only broke the four minute mile once, going down a steep hill. But that wimpy drive train probably saved me millions in exposure to speeding tickets, etc. Another issue was the fact that the car used more oil than gasoline. Talk about 'blow-by', the engine was shot...and made pretty blue smoke. How did I deal with that wimpy drive train on such a great looking car? Well, I always was more into Presentation than Performance, and what I did was add 'fake headers' to mimic a duel exhaust system. They looked great coming out of that extended rear deck. I also installed a 'Smitty Glass Pack', and BINGO! The car sounded like a screamer. I'd hold the car in low gear, working the transmission against the engine cruising down even a slight incline...and that car sounded like it was capable of 200-210 mph. I had lots of offers for a drag race, but always was careful to say, "No thank you...I need to save these rear tires...". Sad to say, I do not even have a picture of that car. I do not know what happened to it. When I graduated from High School in 1957, young men still had an eight year military obligation, which I decided to address. I joined the Navy two months after graduating. I was gone for four years (Plankowner, USS SPRINGFIELD CLG-7). Shirley Jean waited. The car didn't. I suspect my brother Ron ended up with it, and it probably died. Pity, but make a note that the 'Smitty Glass Pack' is a hero in this story...it helped make me and that car appear to be more than we deserved...and I still got Shirley Jean. I took an older TR3 muffler apart and found, like others did, that it was a straight through, perforated pipe, glass pack. I ordered some Brockman mellowtone mufflers for my TR8 and elected to grab one for the TR3 too. It was odd calling in a 3 muffler order. I love the way they sound on the TR8, which does not currently have a crossover pipe, so it's basically 2 each @ 1.75 liter engines. It sounds deep and has a great burble at idle and mellows out as the RPM's go up. I did this late fall and don't have much time on them, but my first impression was awesome and glad I had one more for the TR3. YouTube has lots of videos with audio. They are straight through, 2 inch "louvered" pipe, glass packs, so they should flow well. I will exit at the stock location. http://www.brockmancustomparts.com/ I brought the 26" body x 36 inch overall ones in a 2 inch glass pack because I wanted relative quiet sound. They said they use these long ones on busses but I love the way they sound on the TR8 and suspect they will be similar on the TR3. They?re impressively loud when I floor it but at cruise speed I hear mostly wind noise, not a blatting exhaust so it?s quite tolerable for long trips (and my ears are offended by exhaust drone on long runs). This may have a lot to do with the light load imposed on the engine and I?m not sure how a 4-cylinder engine doing the same amount of work would sound. I've got a '41 pickup project - Merc crank, 2 deuces, finned aluminum heads and Smithy dual exhaust, of course. - Larry On 4/27/2018 2:26 PM, Bill Dentinger via Fot wrote: Amici... I was instructing at our drivers school this past weekend when it blew out. I may have enough room between the firewall to use a short blunt air chisel but I have my doubts so if anyone has a better one please let me know.
