The Austin America . . . little known and long forgotten small British sedan. It was one of the pioneer front-wheel-drive cars in America. They had a fleet of them at Airways Rent-a-Car here in Salt Lake in about 1969. My best friend, David was the manager there and was a BMC enthusiast who had owned, at different times, a Metropolitan, an MG Midget MkI and eventually bought my Sprite the first time I sold it. He had also worked in parts at our local BMC franchise which had the new Austin America proudly displayed in its show room. It was his idea to buy a bunch of the cars (at about $1800 each) to add to the Airways "sub-compact" fleet in Salt Lake. Unfortunately things didn't work out so well and Airways was not pleased with all the constant repairs, the worst of which was the automatic transmission that would go out every 5,000 miles or so. After only 6 months in service they decided to get rid of these little pigs and sold them off for about $600 to $750 each as I recall. One went to Los Angeles where an unhappy owner experienced the dreaded transmission slippage immediately. David decided to exchange a nice blue one for the slipping-trans yellow one. I had the opportunity(?) to drive the blue one down there and limp home in the yellow one. On the way down a friend and I went through Reno to see the Harrah Automobile Collection (the REAL Harrah collection, back when hundreds of cars filled several the warehouses). The trip turned out to be a great adventure and to our surprise neither car left us stranded. However, I managed to run the blue one out of gas about 20 miles shy of Reno at about 2:00 am and coasted off the freeway and into a closed station to steal some gas out of the hose if possible. The station was at the bottom of the ramp and was one of those old vintage type stations right out of the 40s which consisted of a little old metal building with hundreds of small-paned windows, one small pump island with two old pumps. As we coasted in we could hear a strange squishing sound sort of like driving on wet gravel. Turned out it was a layer of green stink bugs that formed a sort of carpet around the gas pumps. What a stinky mess that was. I had to get out and walk around on the mushy green slime. And, despite my best efforts I could get NO gas from either of the hoses. And we didn't even have any fumes in the tank. There seemed to be a town just over the hill which was apparent from the lights that glowed into the damp night air. No way to get the car there by pushing so we looked around and found an old tractor sitting next to the station. We wondered if it might have some gas in it. I took an empty Coke can and went over and pulled the gas line off the tank which was located above the engine. I filled the can with some very odd smelling fuel from the tractor (which I'm sure was making a toxic brew when mixing with the residual Coke in the can) then tiptoed through the green mush to add the precious liquid to the Austin. I had no idea if this fuel I had salvaged was even combustible. The smell of the green stink bug guts was overwhelming. About that time a dog started barking about 100 yards up a little dirt road from the station then a guy came out on his porch and started yelling at us. "What the f * ck are you doing?!!!" he shouted. I hurried and dumped the rest of the gas in the Austin then prayed it would start. It fired right up and I popped the lever into D (probably screwing up the trans on this car too!) and we roared off into the night. We drove over the hill to find that the lights we had seen were coming from one source . . . a Gas-a-Mat station about a half mile down the road. Gas-a-Mat was the very first coin-operated, serve-yourself station, a new trend we felt certain would NEVER catch on! We motored into the station and started checking our wallets for quarters since that was the only coin that would operate the pumps. (Self-serve credit cards were still years in the future.) Being 2:00 in the morning there was, of course, no one there to make change. The place was deserted and there wasn't a sole around. We scrounged up one quarter which in those days would buy nearly a gallon of gas. I put it in the pump and started getting my 2-bits worth of gas. Out came the fuel which I hoped would dilute the questionable gas we stole from the tractor. I figured we could make it to Reno on the 25 cents. To my surprise the pump did not cut off after it reached 25 cents! It kept pumping and pumping. I filled the tank till it was running over the top and the pump was still eager to give us as much fuel as we wanted. With nothing to add fuel to it seemed a shame to waste this rare opportunity. We briefly considered laying the pump nozzle on the ground full open and tossing out a match as we left but I foolishly turned the pump off, hung the nozzle up and motored on to Reno. _______________________________________________ Bmcu@autox.team.net Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html Archive: http://www.team.net/archive Forums: http://www.team.net/forums From bmcu-bounces@autox.team.net Thu Jul 8 21:41:32 2010 From: "brownie" To: "Richard Weyland" , "Andrew Frink" Date: Thu, 8 Jul 2010 21:04:10 -0600 Subject: Re: [Bmcu] Another car finds a home....... What is the problem with the engine? Is it just worn out, or is this a case of the classic thrust washer problem, where they fall out and the crank becomes a crude cutting tool chewing up the block? 1500s are also known for chewing up the #3 rod bearing, sometimes the #2. I haven't actually checked lately, but there are folks who will sell a complete, rebuilt engine for maybe something on the order of $3,000 dollars. Just guessing here, I had meant to write up a more accurate quote for a fellow who needed an engine, but never got around to doing so. This new day job is taking up too much of my Triumph time! It all boils down to what you are willing to spend on it. You could easily put, say, $5,000 into a Spitfire and up with a nice $4,000 dollar car. If I built you an engine like the one I had in the Killer Spit, hand selected components, precision balanced assemblies, lots of trick racing, uh, stuff, careful, painstaking assembly and all that labor intensive work it would cost a lot more than just a nice, peppy street motor. Forget all that. Your car is toast. I'll give $100 for it as it sits. You'll have to haul it to my place, I still don't have a vehicle to pull my trailer. mjb. _______________________________________________ Bmcu@autox.team.net Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html Archive: http://www.team.net/archive Forums: http://www.team.net/forums From bmcu-bounces@autox.team.net Thu Jul 15 10:16:08 2010 From: "Lynn Wall" To: Date: Thu, 15 Jul 2010 08:33:21 -0700 Subject: [Bmcu] Suggestions for rolling restoration My son has $2500 to $3000 to spend on a car for college. Several things to consider: How much auto work has he done in the past? If he has done significant work on cars, including electrical troubleshooting, then a rolling restoration is more feasable than if this is his first project. Will he have access to a garage? When I was in the Navy I had a '66 Ford Falcon but the house I was renting did not have covered parking. Not so good 9 months out of the year when it rains everyday in the northwest. Snow is even worse. Where is he going to college? I havn't spent significant time in a little, rear wheel drive, convertible in the snow, but I imagine it is not fun. Aside from the MG I am a Ford man. I think the 97-2001 Escorts and the Focus are great cars, great in the snow with decent tires and are in that price range. It might be in his price range. It was on 5th South and about 1200 East, south side of the street. That is all I know about it, I didn't stop to check anything. Spitfires are also available fairly cheap. Of course like a fellow I knew once said, all these cars cost the same - it is just a matter of how much you want to pay at the start. You might think you are getting a great bargain until you start buying parts and paying people to work on the car. mjb. _______________________________________________ Bmcu@autox.team.net Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html Archive: http://www.team.net/archive Forums: http://www.team.net/forums From bmcu-bounces@autox.team.net Thu Jul 15 19:24:24 2010 From: Mark J Bradakis To: bmcu@autox.team.net Date: Thu, 15 Jul 2010 18:45:33 -0600 Subject: Re: [Bmcu] Suggestions for rolling restoration Just for grins here's something I dug out which I wrote some years ago when I sold one of my cars. mjb. That smile gave him away, plastered across his face like a freshly painted billboard. I couldn't help but remember the first few times I bought cars, young and eager, full of energy. He looked at it, and liked it. A young teacher at a nearby private school, sort of thin and lanky, reminded me of an old high school friend. My friend and I had been over at Melvin's garage when the head was finally back on the red TR3, the carbs were adjusted and the battey connected. Time for a test ride, both then and now. I hop into the Rust Rocket, fire it up and back out of the tricky section of the drive. Matt, the teacher, beams with delight as I jump out of the driver's seat, offering the vacated premises to him. Around the block, timid and slow, he barely gets over about 2 grand before shifting. Fumbling about with the stubby TR-3 lever, he is unsure of the car and his desire. We putter back to the Fat Chance, and he gets out, again with the tell tale smile irrevocably, it seems, wedged into his face. I offer to show him the way that *I* drive the car, so off we go again. He is impressed. I wanted to tell him about the long hours of tedious, dirty work, the small agonies of constantly bruised hands during major projects, dirty fingers, late nights, swapping trannies in the drive in the dead of winter. I wanted to warn him of wallowing in the mud after a roadside stall, looking for a clue, or perhaps a lost bolt. I wanted to let him know there would be days he would curse the name of Triumph, of all things British, and most especially he would curse me and the clattering coughs of the worthless red hulk he foolishly bought that summer's day. I did not need to tell him of days like this, though, with crystalline skies and throaty exhaust, bouncing around corners in a car crafted for such joys. He hadn't really wanted a Triumph, he had been wanting a Jaguar, it seems, his sights set on someday having the perfect XK 150. Too much for a man of quite modest means. But for now, he has the Rust Rocket, and that smile on his face. _______________________________________________ Bmcu@autox.team.net Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html Archive: http://www.team.net/archive Forums: http://www.team.net/forums From bmcu-bounces@autox.team.net Fri Jul 16 10:19:27 2010 From: Clayton Merchant To: BMCU Date: Fri, 16 Jul 2010 09:31:42 -0600 (GMT-06:00) Subject: [Bmcu] Trappers Loop Good day everyone. The show starts at 10AM and our permit ends at 2PM and the street will be open to the public at that time. Any other car will have to be parked elsewhere. When you arrive at 8:30 or thereafter come up Park Avenue, AKA Highway 224 from I 80 and turn left at 7th Street to Main Street and then turn left on Main Street and park your car diagonally heading down hill with 5 feet of space between both sides of your car and your neighbors on either side and enjoy the day. We will have a raffle and give awards before 2PM. Please come and enjoy the show with or without your car. No charge to the public. If you want to show your car but haven't registered please look for me at a table half way down the street on the west side and if their is space you must pay your fee, register and obtain your packet and your car # so you will be eligible for an award. As I said above any car on the street must be registered and will not be allowed to park unless they are. We have 45 cars registered so space may be limited as we can only park on lower Main Street between 7th & 9th Streets. If you care to take the driving tour on Sunday following is that information. Dave Maxwell will be leading the tour and following is where you will meet up with him.
