I just got through talking to several people who could be considered
authorities on both Datsuns and the rules of the day. First off Rob
Walker who has been with SCCA for 30+ years and in many capacities
stated that he believes the rules were changed in abvout the middle of
1971 as he raced a 1971 Datsun 1200 with coil overs that year as well
and yes the B-C sedans did have slightly different rules that certainly
allowed the coil-overs then. But I also called Gerry Mason who owns the
BRE 240 Z and thinks that the rule was a mid season rule initiated by
Bob Sharp and was adopted in 71-72 and Gerry states that he has all the
paperwork for this rule change and will find it if its needed and also
stated that some years ago this paperwork was shown to the powers that
be at an SVRA event and he remembers having this conversation with Jack
back then. I also have a book on my desk here about building a
suspension for the datsun 1200 written in the early 70's showing the 240
Z struts modified with coil-overs and I will look for further
documentation if needed but as someone said the update backdate rule
pretty much covers this mod all the way back to the first year Z cars.
