Re the silicone debate.
I have used Dow Corning silicone fluid for some years in an open wheeler and
also a racing sports car. I have never had a single braking problem and was
known as the last of the desperate late brakers so I gave the brakes
buggery.
Compressibility is something I never experienced but I was scrupulous with
cleanliness and new seals etc when I first used it.
I believe the civil aircraft industry uses it in the brakes on Jumbos etc
and I know they get very hard use. The major benefit is the ability to store
a car for a long time without worrying about corrosion in the braking
system.
If I was a serious every weekend modern formula car racer maybe I would have
a different opinion but for the casual historic racer it seems to be fine
and so far no bad experience for me.
I have also used it in a couple of restoration projects that are only used
very occasionally and the owners tell me that the brakes are great.
