Use the Toyota High Speed alternator. It can be found on Toyota Tercels,
1985 and later (as well as many other Asian cars - I found one on a Chevy
Sprint) at any salvage yard for about $15 used. They are internally
regulated and will need only a one wire hook-up to the battery and a switched
ignition wire to excite the rotor/magnet. You can hook-up the idiot warning
light or run an amp meter as a charge indicator. These units are bullet
proof and are Toyota's recomendation for retrofit to earlier cars with
enternal regulators. They are made by Nipon-Denzo and can be identified by a
squareish sheet metal cover on the rear of the unit to cover the regulator
and diodes. They have an internal fan giving the case a nicely curved look.
They will be found with both types of pulleys which can be easily changed to
one that works with your car,
