Folks,
It's quiet in the winter...but not for long!
Check out http://www.speedvision.com/classics/index.html for the latest
series from our grizzled, veteran "observer" of the vintage racing scene,
the former editor of Vintage Motorsport Magazine, Art Eastman. Many people
have encouraged him to continue with his commentary so that folks in all
geographic regions of the country can come to a better understanding of the
myriad of choices on the vintage racing calendar by his illustration of
various organizations, and it appears that's where he is going...
I disagree with Art's premature pronouncements concerning the demise of
SVRA's event philosophy in the wake of the HSR "alliance." As a matter of
fact, I've had enough interest from my customers so that Lime Rock Labor Day
is back on the schedule for almost a dozen of our customers! I think the
VSCCA/SVRA co-production will be a good one, and reminiscent of Labor Day's
gone by... A good fit. For SVRA, the technical specification and classing
continuity provided by Jack Woerhle along with Howard Turner's commitment to
continuing with educational offerings for driver education and "value added"
course instruction by both E. Paul Dickinson at HSR and myself with SVRA,
shows that the "separate, but equal" philosophies will continue to exist,
and if reinforced, may allow both groups to thrive, rather than have one
overwhelmed by another.
As far as VDCA is concerned, the goals are laudable AND attainable, but
people must put their money where their mouth is and support a place where,
as David Whiteside says, "ALL cars are period-prepared." VDCA had an
excellent first year, regardless of Art's concerns about car numbers,
hosting an extraordinary "Homecoming" celebration at VIR last June which
catapulted VDCA and VIR higher on to the "national scene" of vintage and
historic racing. I've asked many of my customers to continue supporting VDCA
events, as I do, and with the geographical proximity their events offer,
that's easy!
I'm going to feed Art some info about VSCCA, an organization I consider the
"best-kept secret" of the vintage racing scene. Far from being "elitist",
VSCCA offers a friendly, relatively low-key, much more "social" happening
than many groups, which is why I'm looking forward to Spring Sprints in Lime
Rock in April. Hope it doesn't snow!
For those of you with Datsun 510's, BMW 2002's, Alfa GTA/GTV's. Ford
Pinto's, check out the www.bsedan.com site and join the Vintage Sedan Racing
Group, the VSRG. A number of folks are working hard to put together events
within established events all over the East Coast, but you need to join
first! Caio!
