Would you use safety harnesses that met the same criteria as these tires?  
Assuming you have really big tires, there's maybe 2 sq. ft. of rubber keeping 
things pointed in the right direction.  

Seriously, the rubber does harden with age and the bonds between the various 
bits inside the tire slowly deteriorate.   Unfortunately, such failures may 
not surface until your at speed.  Unzipping a tread pack at an unexpected 
moment can ruin a lap in a hurry.  Any hard driving or high speed work should 
be done on relatively new rubber, say a quarter of the age of your tires.  .
