As a new vintage racer with only 1 year under my belt, this thread isn't doing
my heart any good! My '58 Sprite does have a large steel plate mounted adjacent
to the flywheel/trans, but there are a couple indications that show me it let a
PO down.

Two ugly rips in the sheetmetal 4" to the rear of the plate show that someone
took shrapnel to the knee. Evidently some nasty bits can take very irregular
flight patterns. Also, several inches behind my shifter is an interesting area
of metal trauma where the front U-joint tried to come through the top of the
tunnel. The original hole/tear is still there, and I use it to view the
condition of the current U-joint. I hope my tenure behind the wheel is alot less
exciting!

My new project now is to enlarge that steel plate! Thanks for the poke in the
ribs to get me moving again -
