Hello List,
This isn't a vintage racing question, but it is an automotive question and
I'm hoping that someone on the list can point me in the right direction.
Besides, this is the only list I'm on.
My friend has a 1955 Ford Thunderbird with the origional 6 volt electrical
system. Problem is the battery is always dead. What I would like to set him
up with is an onboard battery charger (1.5 amps or less) that stays in the
car and you just unplug when you want to drive. I have this set-up on all my
12 volt collector cars and it works fine for me. Problem is: no six volt low
amp onboard chargers. The car now has an 8 volt battery to help with the
starting, but that's dead now too, again, no 8 volt chargers.
I talked to a Thunderbird expert (?) in Southern California and discussed
converting to 12 volt and using a GM 12 volt alternator. He says I'll burn
out the horns ($125 ea) and the power seat motor ($$$). Does anyone on the
list have any ideas on this problem, or can refer me to a higher source?
Many thanks in advance.
