 Hello
I have just purchased a Tranx Limited slip differential and am having
trouble fitting it to my Mini. It seems the tranx is bigger than the
standard
diff and just does not fit the
transmission case. Has anyone had any experience with fitting one.
 Any help will be appreciated.
 Thanks
 David

David,

It is just like all of the other LSD's for the Mini. You must do a lot of
grinding and test fitting to get it into the diff. case.

It is best to strip the gearbox to avoid particles in the tranny gears, but
if you pack it with rags and blow it out afterwards, you should be ok.

It will be easier to do the test fitting with the pinion gear off the shaft.

Usually the main interference is with the crown wheel bolt heads hitting the
case. You should turn, grind or whatever the heads as thin as you can and
still have enough left to get a wrench on them.

Set the diff. assy. into the case and start grinding away any material that
gets in the way. It may take quite a bit. Be carefull not to go too far on
either side. You should be able to get it in.

Once you have a free turning crown wheel, you will have to shim BOTH sides to
get a tight fit between the output covers. It doesn't matter that the crown
wheel a pinion are perfectly aligned as long as they turn freely.

Once you have decided on the shim pack for each side, disassemble and clean
everything. Locktite or safety wire the crownwheel bolts. If you took the
gearbox gears out, be sure to drill and safety wire the shift fork grub
scews. Locktite doesn't seem to work on them very well.

That should do it. Not exactly a bolt-on mod, but not really that awful
either.
