A friend of mine posted this to another car list. He begins his message
making the point the he's had a long relationship with Steve Earle....
"What's so interesting about Stirling's brain fade this year is that he had
just come off of a one year suspension for "agressive driving". It seems
Stirling can't avoid using somone elses car as a carrom shot through a
corner."
"Anyway, the story goes that, after the first incident Stirling came
ungluded at being suspended and really teed off on Steve. (not an
intelligent move if you want to be a part of the Monterey Historice). This
year Steven and Stirling were in the back of a limo heatedly discussing the
latest incident. Evidently Stirling was pressing his point that he should
recieve dispensation because of his racing history. Steve's response was
"Only World Champions recieve dispensation. You are NOT a World Champion"."
I now have the Speedvision tape of the race and remain amazed by the
incident. On Sunday, a Lotus 26 got its front wheel taken off after a spin
but the announcers never mentioned that that had been caused by contact.
Sorry for stirring this up again, but I just got the tape....
