Rick;

Sorry to hear about your problem....seems I recall a song..."You picked a
fine time to leave me, rear wheel"....

I also suffered some sort of related problem this weekend at the CSRG
Buchanan Field race. While running second, trying to regain the lead on the
last lap, something let go in back...either an axle, or the ring & pinion.
Haven't pulled it apart yet to see, but thankfully, my wheels stayed on.

I've run the same stock Cortina axles since for 10 years now and never broke
one. I have heard of one or two other failures, however. Dan Radowitz at
Rapid Motions had some beefier axles made for Cortina's, and I believe he
still sells them. Try Dan at 925 736-8462.

A suggestion is to paint a stripe down the length of your axle. Then, when
you periodically service the seals or bearings and have it out, check the
stripe for straightness. If you're seeing it twist, you're probably heading
for an axle failure.
