A Datsun 510 (even a 67) is on the cusp of acceptability. You are correct that they are relatively inexpensive and have great potential. The problem is that you may be prevented from participating in events put on by neighboring clubs such as CSRG. I'd put those same dollars and effort into a 67 or earlier Alfa or a TR-3.
