Hi Jim,
When I went vintage racing, I had to do a lot of scrimping and making do
with less than perfect equipment. But the one area that I didn't scrimp
on was the safety equipment. A lot of guys spend a fortune on their car
and then pinch pennies when it comes to the safety gear.
I suggest you buy a decent three layer suit and a full coverage helmet.
I got both of mine on sale at Racer Wholesale near Atlanta. Bought them
around the first of the year on sale and paid less than $600 for both.
The helmet is a Simpson and the suit is an Autogear. It's like I tell my
wife when I see the motorcycle riders with the beanie helmets - $10
brain, $10 helmet. It's your choice. BTW, buy a good 6 point harness
too! Oh, did I mention a good roll cage too.
