   You have heard, of course, of the hapless pig on track during the 12
Hours of Sebring...

Let's see here (consulting my 1987 edition of "Flattened Fauna"):
 "Armadillo...unaware...vehicle is approaching until it is very near,
and then the animal's startled response is to leap straight up into the
air, usually to about bumper height."
