I have been following historic rallying in Europe for more than 10 years
now and the philosophy that eligible cars are disappearing due to
attrition is in fact a fallacy (at least across the pond). Since historic
rallying got off the ground there now so many entrants in particular
events that organizers have to limit the fields.
Have you tried getting an entry to the rally in South Africa next year ?
there are only 25 slots open and the event is more than a year away !.
The London-Sydney Rally in the year 2000 is already getting booked up.
The resurgence of historic racing has actually increased then numbers of
cars that were previously either mothballed or sitting around somebody's
back yard rusting away. Many privateers have now gone and restored they
rusting hulks just so that they can participate. If it was not for this,
these hulks would have long since been scrapped.
The other point is that because of the commonality of certain cars in
historic rallying (Porsche, Mini, MGB, Cortina etc etc), certain
organizers have actually limited the numbers of entries of a certain
marque (the Porsche 911 is a special case). To better success in
obtaining an entry to certain events like the Monte, you stand a better
chance by build a "unpopular" car, like a Ford Zephyr or some of the
Rootes products.
I think a similar thing is happening in the States, because of the
increasing popularity of vintage racing, people are now taking cars which
otherwise would be scrapped or mothballed, out and preparing then for
events, thereby increasing the number of vintage cars. Sure there are
cars written off at races, but I'll bet for every car that is totally
wrecked there are plenty more to take its place.
