I put an electric fuel pump in line on my '49 Roadster. I installed it only
because I was tired of getting stranded with a malfunctioning fuel pump
because of debris in the restored fuel tank. It's mounted on the inner
fender with a filter in front and another behind. I didn't want it under the
car because any roadside maintenance that might be required would be
difficult at best.

I have it on a switch and, to answer your question, I turn it on, wait until
it stops clicking and then hit the starter. Engine fires right up and if I
remember I turn it off and run on the mechanical pump.

Wow! Many thanks to all who responded. What a great crew! One thing I forgot
to ask is how many people use the electric pump to feed the existing
mechanical pump and how many people rely on the electric pump by itself.
