I never considered a Belleville washer or a wavy washer as a locking devic=
e.=C2=A0 I consider them an anti-rattle device that, when used with a locki=
ng nut (either nylon or other) will allow for expansion/contraction or othe=
r compliance axially and will act against float.=C2=A0 EG alternator pivot =
bolts.
Split washers are good for general purpose applications where no torque spe=
c is provided.=C2=A0 If a torque spec is given do not use a lock washer!=C2=
=A0 And don't use a hardware store variety flat washer either!

I also found these interesting alternatives:

https://shop4fasteners.co.uk/fasteners/washers/locking-washers/schnorr-wash=
ers/schnorr-safety-lock-washers-type-s-self-colour.html

https://shop4fasteners.co.uk/fasteners/washers/locking-washers/nord-lock-wa=

I don't think I've ever seen these before.
