Even when the cars were new, it was an accepted fact at the factory that d=
ifferential units, were inherently noisy. They howled or moaned or rumbled=
and this issue affected the whole model range. It was unusual to find a c=
ar with a quiet one! Many different =E2=80=98cures=E2=80=99 were tried and=
the only moderately successful one was to change the machining angle of t=
he gear teeth. The axles were all bought-in components from (I think a com=
pany called Salisbury) who maintained that modifying the manufacturing pro=
cess (angle of gear teeth cutting) would result in a higher cost price whi=
ch the Purchase Department refused to consider, so we were stuck with nois=
y axles. End of story.

I chased after a "rear end" clunk for years. Decided it was in the differ=
ential, and decided to replace it with a Nissan R200 limited slip after re=
placing u-joints and checking mounts many times. When I was installing th=
e differential and new, shortened drive shaft I discovered one of the tran=
smission mount bolts had gone missing.

If you are not finding it, may be worth expanding your search, however, th=
e only when cold thing is a bit of a head scratcher.

BTW, very glad I did the diff swap, even though it was not the cause of th=
e clunk, car is much quieter, especially with the top up.

Twenty years of rear end clunk when I put it in reverse with cold engine a=
nd I'm tired of it. But as soon as the engine warms up it disappears and i=
dismiss it. Do I bite the bullet and get it checked out? I'm sure my mech=
anic will say get it fixed. And how much do you think a repaired rear end =
will cost me?
