Hello all. Hoping you can help with this. I have a '74 TR6 I'm restoring
and am contemplating the wheels. The car originally came with solid wheels,
but I have also have a set of nearly new (READ: in absolutely excellent
shape) Dayton wires that I could put on it. Yes, I know, the stud are a
different length - been down that road a few times. My question is: is a
TR6 more desirable with wires? I don't plan on keeping it once it's
finished.... just a thing I have about the love of restoration. It's a
Malard blue car with factory OD (and still has OD), so I want to make the
car all it can be. Thoughts on the wheels?

Brian

Tony, if I follow you correctly, you are saying that by changing the spring=
s I may have made it so that all the mechanical advance is used up at idle =
and I may have no more at speed.=C2=A0 Where with the older springs I would=
get mechanical advance later in the rpms and so have more advance at speed=
.
Would the marking on the weight of 13 degrees indicate its maxium advance?=
=C2=A0 If so, I suspect I may in fact be using all the mechanical at idle s=
ince my idle timing jumped past the pully markings and I can only estimate =
a 10-15 degree jump. Maybe I should go back to the old springs.

>>The springs should just change what RPM it takes to get to full advance
but the full advance should be the same (weights against the stops).?
I'm a little unclear on how much you changed the timing, it sounds like
you had to retard the timing after the spring replacement - this would
also retard the "all in" timing, which would be what you're running at
3200 RPM.? It's possible it's worse at 3200 now than it was before
because the full advance timing is now less.<<

I believe the question is "will a TR6 with wire wheels sell for a higher p=
rice than one with steel wheels.? I don't know what the market is but opini=
ons vary on the desirability of wires on a TR6.? Personally, I don't care f=
or wire wheels on the TR6.? I think the TR6 look is too modern for the anac=
hronistic look of wire wheels.??? I love the look of wires on the TR3 and T=
R4, however.
But this is just my opinion.? I'm sure there are others who like the look o=
f wire wheels on the TR6.? That is their opinion and equally valid.? It's a=
ll about what you like.

So the answer to the question is what is the market trend?
I don't know.

I'm not saying all advance is used at idle, but what I'm saying is that=20
when all the mechanical advance is used, you're at a different advance=20
setting than before (you had to change the timing after changing the=20
springs, so when you do that the full advance amount changes=20
correspondingly).? I'm unclear which direction it changed.? Your "at=20
3200 RPM" observation would almost always be at full advance regardless=20
of which springs you're using.

Stiffer springs should equate to less advance at idle than before I'd think=
.

I finally had some time to work on the Triumph today after a long time
spent working on the new old house we bought.=C2=A0 I am pretty sure the
occasional miss and rough running is fixed.

The PCV valve is a press fit into the intake manifold.=C2=A0 Over the fifty=
 plus
years of use the press fit isn't so tight, and it has been coming out or
loose, resulting in a fairly major vacuum leak.

I wired it on, thought it looked janky, thought about shims or machining
for an o-ring (probably the best solution tight fit and no leaks), but not
having the equipment for making an o-ring groove, so ended up sticking a
greasy rag in the hole to catch swarf and drilling a hole for a set screw.

Functional, seems to be running much better, but the problem was
intermittent so time will tell.

Mostly just excited to have the new shop done and and time to work on the
car again.

You see the early 6s with wires more often.=C2=A0 I think they look ok, but=
 the
stock wheels or panasports are more appropriate for the 70s vibe the car
has going.

ISTR that when I worked in the Export Dept at Standard Triumph five decades=
ago, the majority of TRs regardless of model, went to the US and Canada wi=
th wire wheels as production fitted extras. Similar for Spitfire and GT6. C=
an?t now remember the split between painted and chrome. Later, when I was s=
elling them to North American visitors from the London showroom, as salesme=
n we did our damndest to ensure each car had wire wheels and overdrive too.=
The wires made the car look better and the overdrive made a straight four =
on the floor far less enjoyable than a seven speeder. And of course, the xt=
ra sales commission was an important ingredient.
