Since I replaced the transmission in my 59 TR3, I have been hearing a
tapping noise (Tap, Tap, Tap) that begins at approxitely 3000 RPM and
speeds up with the RPMS linearly through 4200 RPM when the engine is
under load. It does not do it at idle when revving the engine.

It doesn't appear to be tapping at a rate equal to the RPM, but at what
seems to be a consistent rate directly related to the RPM. It is not a
valve.

I fear that it may be a rod knocking, but the engine has 40-50 PSI of
oil pressure at idle, and 50-60 at any RPM above 2000. If it was a rod,
woulndn' t I most certainly have an oil pressure problem?

So my question is - is it the clutch/pressure plate or is it a rod, or
is there some sort of harmonic frequency in my exhaust system, which
crosses directly under the transmission and could potentially be making
contact with the trans while the engine is under load?
