Just installed a TR4 box in my 59 TR3.

I didn't re-locate the transmission x-member, I just drilled the holes
in the correct location. Alternatively, you could use some 3/`16 plate
and modify the stock transmission mount to fit.

I am enjoying having synchro 1st.

There are a few. The TR4 box is slightly longer, he will need to slot
the holes in the rear crossmember. The difference is only about 3/8" so
it is possible to force it in otherwise, but it will strain the motor
mounts enough to lead to early failure.

The tunnel will need to be modified to clear the starter bulge.

Seemed to work OK for me, but that was a long time ago and I may have
forgotten a detail.

At least the 1-2 rail also has to change; I changed all 3 of them. The
main advantage, to me, was being able to keep the dipstick. Also a good
time to replace the seals on the shift rails.

I have a later TR6 box in my TR3 (originally installed in the 3A after
the
TR4 box broke). It presents a few more challenges, but nothing that
can't be overcome.
