Yes, the original solenoid is still required if you are keeping the original
starter.  The relay in the power block (and the wiring to it) will NOT
handle the hundreds of amps drawn by the starter motor.  But if you are
using one of the "high tech" gear-drive starters, they include an integral
solenoid that can be used to replace the original solenoid.  (I kept my
original solenoid, because the earlier cars had a button on the solenoid
that comes in handy sometimes.)

The solenoid does not care about polarity, leave it wired the same as
before.
