True enough, but they were not alone in that regard. Basically ALL
emissions engines from that period were significantly detuned. It has taken
major advances in computer control, catalyst technology and engine design to
get back that performance.
And it's still not unusual for the US version of an engine to make less
power than a non-pollution controlled equivalent. The difference is usually
smaller than it was with the TR6, but it's still there.
