I'm not sure I understand that statement.  But, have you checked that the
return spring on the slave is always pulling the slave piston all the way
home in the cylinder ?  And that the slave pushrod is properly adjusted ?  A
lazy (or broken) return spring, combined with poor adjustment, can cause
problems like that.

Another possibility is a broken taper pin; although I'm not sure how that
could cause the stiff/floppy/stiff syndrome.
