I too use a rubber plug on the side of the tunnel (though I used a smaller plug - like the one above the front U-joint) but prior to having that I would fill with a 1/2" (?) OD clear plastic tube run down behind the fuel pump and into the fill hole. Okay, this drip IV method is slow so It's a good idea to have something else to do whilst the funnel drains.
