Since you are only replacing that seal I think you should get proper
float upon reassembly... but if you do plan to check the float
afterwards you might want to check it before removal so you'll know if
your work has changed anything. If you do check it either before or
after, be sure the opposite wheel is off the ground (obvious I suppose,
but apparently wasn't obvious to me).
When reassembling you will want to take care not to damage the new seal
by dragging the splines of the half-axle across the seal surface. Not
tricky, just have to support the axle as you start to slide it in.
